Is this the same Phil Dawson who has given us FSIUCP?
You're getting him confused with Peter Dawson, who made FSUIPC
Actually, It's Peter DOWSON..

and an update for everyone.. it is possible there is a network drive that holds backups and is not damaged. They wont know till this weekend when they can physically get to the server system and look everything over. Right now they are not sure if the extent of the loss is 100% or less

You guys miss my point. The internet is my business and I've been runnnning web servers for over 10 years.
Calling something a hack when it is almost for sure incompetence and gaining sympathy is the actions of a great site? When this leads to someone being wrongly accused it is a worse sin than the hack.
The fact that they have lost data means they didn't run a good business. Either they had backups, which means they were lying. Or they did not have backups which means they are incompetent. Backing up from server to server is not a backup.
The whole thing stinks.

NO ONE at AVSIM in management has accused him of taking down AVSIM.. that is BUZZ created by the masses and not AVSIM
HE HAS been nailed for stealing email addresses and using them for spam
HE WAS rightfully accused of what he did. Tom Allensworth never SPAMMED anyone
and that was a bold-face immature BS suggestion on your part
LAST
For someone who is such a professional you sure have a very immature way of showing it very much like the kiddies perpetuating the RUMOR that this person took down AVSIM except the opposite.. you jump on the other side without READING.
They posted quite clearly their network backups may be OK.. they do not know because they lost communication with the server and must go there to check out what happened. They do not know the entire extent of the damage at this point and will not until this weekend

I hope you understand my position

1. Their actions lead to the accusations. Read.
2. You don't loose contact with a server unless it is physically unplugged.
I see you believe them.

No.. I believe what I have in hard facts and evidence.. And I have all I need for the email issue right here at home.
I do not subscribe to hearsay however as Bill said.. when it stinks the dog is not far from the pile. In that I will wait to see the result of the investigation before making any solid decisions around it. Regardless he was nailed for what he did and I for one am glad Tom had the guts to make sure everyone knew it. People like that should be exposed for breaking privacy laws in gain
None the less, based on what happened with the email addresses I would not trust the person who stole those addresses to run a clean game of jacks much less anything with my data on it.
As for the rest.. son, I worked with MS on AI algorithms for LIVE Search and their data systems out at the Quincy, WA facility.
I am completely aware of how servers work and the list of possibilities in why AVSIM can not communicate with theirs. I suggest you may wish to get a refresher in IT and quit sputtering tech out of some misplaced anger you do not completely understand

They hired someone who passed all background checks but turned out to be a double agent.
Good double agents cover their tracks. Even if they had a 'real backup' as in your ideal scenario, assume that would be destroyed also, as the person involved had all the passwords, usernames and the like.
If something gets hacked in your network, assume anything on that network as suspect, including backups

Even though I am in a real-life situation right now that has hindered my ability to continue my favorate hobby, I was compelled to come back to Simviation to express how shocked I am to hear about this.
I was just about to go to AvSim just to see how everything is going and to see what new addons were available for FSX when all of a sudden I was unable to access the website. At first, I thought it was just a typical server hiccup that most websites go through. I then decided to go into Google and seach AvSim to see if maybe the address has changed. It didn't. However, in the search results, I noticed a small article about AvSim. The title of the article startled me. When I read the article, I quickly found out that AvSim has been hacked and left crippled for good. I just couldn't believe it!
I mean, I can't believe bad it was. This means that AvSim will have to rebuilt what's left of its 13 year career and reputation. I feel sorry for the folks who have friends in the forums who are no longer able to contact each other. I feel sorry for the developers who saw much of their works lost to an attack by a hacker(s). I hope AvSim does recover and takes stronger measures to prevent this from ever happening again.

& I presume you know it's most likely they were not hacked but simply messed up their own system & fooled the mobs into thinking they were hacked to save a red face.
The whole 'hack' thing is a big scam ..... & rather typical ...
It is no secret behind the scenes .......
I hope they come back because avsim tends to keep the people we don't want here - over there ...
. Those small minded, take it all too seriously, types.
On the good side -- FS will hopefully have a good way forward now that it is free of the 'short termness ' & clunky inefficient coding that is world reknowed of Redmond/M$ ...

This is the latest update as of May 19 2009 2030 ESDT.
Due to the generosity of hundreds of community members, we will be able to bring online sometime over the weekend an AVSIM System that all of us will be proud of, I am sure.
High on our list of attributes that these new systems will provide are:
Virtualization
Clustering
Load Leveling
We will be effectively running the equivalent of 20 servers in two boxes.
In addition, we have purchased a 3Com 5500G 1 Gigabit 24 port switch to replace the existing 3C router.
I don’t want to bore you with the details, but here is the inventory of systems that will be brought back online Saturday or Sunday:
• Two HP Proliant DL380 G5’s with quad core Xeon E5450 processors working at 3 GHz.
• 32 GIG of DR2 Ram per G5
• 1.2 terabytes of storage on each G5 using 4 x 300 GB SATA-300/SAS drives.
• In addition, we will be bring back online, or repairing to bring online, our existing three severs, GREEN, PURPLE and WHITE
• We will also bring our NAS back into operation as our primary storage device for the system array.
SYSTEM SOFTWARE AND FUNCTIONALITY:
I am going to put my neck on the line here a bit based upon a briefing I received today, and say that our confidence is building about the state of the library. It is my hope that we can have our legacy library back up and running on Sunday. Our email system would also be back in operation.
We will have a Web site back and operating sometime over the weekend. If we can get the old system up and running, great. If not, we’ll create a redirect page for all three domains back to this forum system. In the meantime, the design team continues to work on the web and library redesigns and we will bring them online as soon as the team gives us the go ahead.
As for the Forums system; our confidence is increasing in that there may be something retrievable there. Again, we won’t know until we can inspect the material that we have since recovered and placed on WHITE for storage. More on that later.
Every one keep there fingers crossed

Now, I'm getting quite confused here. Was Avsim hacked/cracked or not? On the temp Avsim forum I read that they are working very hard to replace the hardware (which is strange since nothing physically was damaged), there seems to be some sort of backup (which is kind of ok) and now I read here that it's all a scam to raise money? Someone care to explain?
