At the moment we are not 100% sure who or why. They are in the process of trying to find out the exact extent of the damage. Any one wanting to use the temporary forum is more than welcome. You will need to register there as user names and passwords were not transferred.
This whole thing is indeed a sad day Cry

What gets me is either the hacker has a beef with Avsim, or this hacker used Avsim for a dry run for something else. If it's a beef, it's a shitty thing to do when it effects others ( kinda like when an arsonist burns down awhole building just to get to one person)! And if it was a practice run for something else, why not take down some of them pirate sites! or better yet hit some creditcard company severs!

Has it been determined that it was, in fact, a hack job and not some major system crash? Kind of a wierd coincidence that both servers would crash at the same time but it has happened before.

I can (to a certain extent) understand hackers going after big companies and trying to find out what really happened at Roswell and who really killed Kennedy, but to destroy a hobby website...............There has to be a lot more to this than meets the eye Huh

Matt

That's exactly what I had in mind as well... Undecided Only gives us more to worry about. I hope we and others out there such as flightsim are safe and secure from this crap Angry

This sucks!

Whatever has caused this.. be it a hack or a hardware/software failure, it's given everybody in the FS community a much needed kick up the **** and hopefully we can all pull together and welcome any Avsim "refugees" (for want of a better word) with the respect that we at SimV know we are best at.

Since when did hackers or vandals need a reason for doing what they do?

The best form of defence is regular offline backups.

I'm still trying to figure out how such a well established site would not have private 'non accessible' backups of the entire system as well as server backup

I can understand being taken down and even a backup server being nailed if its open to connection.. I am having difficulty understanding why in this day and age a site that big would not be protected using very standard and simplistic corporate security backup practices

..unless its an inside job and even then protected backup should only have access to high admin alone

maybe someone at microsoft took ´em out...

they have been on a relentless campaign to vanquish PC gaming so they can shove in their xboxes on us... this is a trend i´ve been detecting all over the gaming industry for some time now, dumber games for console... smother PC gaming in hope it dies

why? simple: cold hard cash! the PC gaming market is growing every day more open for independant and small developers who can publish their games online and not pay tribute to the big companies such as MS and EA *washes mouth with soap for uttering profane names*

with the new cheap, easy-to-use and powerful engines such as DXStudio and Unity, indie developers can create games that rival those made by the big dogs (at least in entertainment value)

consoles are maker-dependant all the way, it´s a huge mafia to get a game out for a major console, and the makers of the platform have full control of what´s being done and who is earning how much money with 'their' games

nothing like a gool ´ole paranoia spree Roll Eyes

Hey, it's a tough economy out there. Could it be that they just can't afford to keep the site going and this is the way to go out without looking bad?

It seems very unlikely that they would lose the backup too.

Just thinking out loud.....

I think we shouldn't blame this on Microsoft (this are very serious accusations against it ), so I will ask you people to be careful in this topic, this is a public open website ,seen by many its a very delicate that we shouldn't even mentioned until the guilty its proven

That was a very interesting article to say the least there Matt. Seems you're in the ball park there Nick. Freaking unbelievable to put so much trust in someone, then to screw you over aswell as a portion of the flight sim community. Think we need to keep a close eye on this one. Has really got me interested in learning as to who done this...a random hack, or an inside job.
