Hi,

For close to a year I have been getting the annoying pop-up surveys on my PC.  The old company had a way to op-out of them, but this new company does not.  You click on the privacy icon and you get a screen that says the website is out of order.

Is there a way to get this crap to stop popping up on my PC?

I have Spybot and ESET NOD32, but neither seems to block this and these surveys are the only thing that pops up.  They pop up even when my web browswer to not open.  As I recall they usually pop up when you first boot up.

Whatever anti-spyware you are using isn't working and you are infected.

Go to this forum and let them analyze a HijackThis log.

This is not caused by a virus, between ESET NOD32, Spybot and Windows Defender any virus would be picked up.

Not necessarily. My first thought is that it's malware.

A friend was infected recently. We tried all the usual applications without success. Finally Malwarebytes picked up some that the others missed. http://www.malwarebytes.org/

As Hagar pointed out.. download, update (first) then run Malwarebytes

Malware is many times not picked up because it is from something you allowed at one point be installed through many possible sources.. a lot of times through software.

Even good files.. in example there is a freeware program called ChrisTV I use for my TV tuner, that give the user an option to not install a feature which I would consider spyware for ads. You must be careful now a days and look at what software offers when it is installed.

The better ones give the user the option to opt-out and sneaky ones do not tell you what you are installing... your scanners may not pick this kind of stuff up because you are allowing it and it does not fall under the scanners rules for a virus or spyware

Also.. ActiveX can let things in too from a website a video is running, etc

Try Malwarebytes and run the FULL system scan.. see if it finds anything

Gents, all I can say is "UNBELIEVABLE",  Malwarebytes flagged 11 Adware.Minibug and Adware.Ascentive files.  Hopefully this will stop those annoying survey requests from popping up.

I used the free download verison, is the purchase version worth the money?

Glad you tried our advice Rod.  It will be interesting to know if that fixed your problem.

I haven't tried the full version as the free version fixed my friend's problem. Nick knows far more about this sort of thing than me. Whether you decide to purchase it is up to you.

Malwarebytes Freeware version is fine as it should be
updated
and run every so often.. about once every 2-3 months unless you think something is not right.. then run it to verify

Adware.Minibug and Adware.Ascentive files

http://www.ascentive.com/

You see that?

FinallyFast.com commercials on TV?

Internet SPEED BOOSTER

Look at the list of software at the top of their page

There is the source of your
malware attack

That place and any website connected to it is a joke. Its a front to install crap on your computer which is where they make their BIG money past the people paying them for their software

Always remember...   If it looks like its too good to be true - It probably is

Microsoft pardner... some pardner!

I would love to see them taken down but they have a lot of big ad money behind them.. They are just like eAcceleration http://www.stop-sign.com/  who I'm sorry to admit an a$$hole on Bainbridge Island, WA where I live owns the company... ex MS director and pulls the same crap with spyware in their products

That crap will install on a VISTA PC with UAC fully enabled and it will STILL infect your system which is exactly what I told you here:

http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1240878523/3#3

UAC is NOT protection for home users and NEVER WAS!    Wink

People that boost VISTA as SAFE and GOOD dont know what they are talking about. As a Microsoft Pardner DEFENDER is instructed to IGNORE what that Asentive software (which you allow) installs!

DEFENDER uses DCS technology: Doesn't Catch Sh*t

There is good free software out there free of crap. You just have to know where to look and be careful when you install things... always look at the installer as it is in operation and with new software I always READ the EULA to see if its telling me I am accepting an installation I dont want.. like ADWARE or MONITOR software

Now its possible Malwarebytes may not have gotten the entire payload. It usually does but there are real tricky critters out there designed to function past their ID'd malware files. In those cases you may need to take further steps... wait and see what happens. It probably got the critters but thats not always the case. It may have gotten the red-herring files installed to make the scanner/user think it did its job

Big money marketing is getting ruthless out there with their malware garbage and they are being assisted by the big boys in doing their dirty work.

Google
MS
Yahoo
Firefox
etc

The ALL make money on demographics and they all play the same game

The free version of malwarebytes should do the job just fine

stay away from Ascentive and anything they offer
