Need More Advice Nick... (Read 264 times)

With the i7 975 seemingly confirmed to be releasing on the 31st of May, I've decided to wait a short period of time before ordering my PC. GPU will be a GTX 285.

So far, I've planned:

CPU: Intel i7 975
GPU: GTX 285
Motherboard: Asus P6T Deluxe
RAM: 6GB DDR3
Hard Drive: 2x WD VelociRaptor 3000

I have a few questions.

First of all, how reliable is the WD VelociRaptor? I have heard that Seagate is more reliable, though Newegg does not seem to share this opinion.

Secondly, I intend to install FSX on a slave WD Raptor and my OS (Vista 64 until Windows 7) on the master so I can upgrade my OS easily later on in the year.

How much fiddling around will it require to get programs installed on the slave to work on the master? Will it require registry editing at all? If that is the case, I will substitute the two Raptors for a Seagate harddrive.

And lastly, I am no expert on RAM. What is the best configuration for 6GB of DDR3? Three 2GB sticks? What manufacturer would be applicable for FSX, and what memory speed should I be looking at?

All input is appreciated.

I don't usually bump my own topics, and I understand that Nick gets flooded with requests for advice, but I simply need some help here so that I can finalise a new system. Wink

Vraps are fine..

You cant change the OS and activate without reinstalling FSX, or, making a full backup of the FSX install and then reinstall FSX and all the addons that require registry support so the new OS is configured for FSX at the same path.. then restore the backup and activate it

I dont know what this slave/master stuff is.. you are not running IDE you are running SATA.. there is no slave/master involved

Thank you for all your help Nick, a new PC has been a long time coming. Might just get the best high capacity Seagate after all, messing around with the registry is not really my thing.

The if the OS is replaced you lose FSX on it too.. so there is no difference in that at all

If you are looking for the best performance put FSX on its own drive

All you have to do is install FSX to the Vrap and the OS does not need any reg changes.

You make a folder call FSX on the root of the Vrap, then during the install process you browse to the Raptor and install FSX to the folder you made
