Hope this is the correct spot.  Just reinstalled FS9 (the four disks, no addons) on a fresh drive with little more than the OS (XP) on it and decided to run DEFRAG.  Sat and watched it grind its little heart out for one hour and 17 minutes - only 59000 total files.  It fought with FS9 most of the time.  On completion is was only 79% optimized - is this unusual?

Doesn't sound like you're using O&O defrag as the defrag tool. If you're doing the windows defrag, don't expect much from it

The program I'm using is called "DefragExpress" sold here www.disktrix.com.  My wife's takes only an average of three minutes - way faster than Windows and she notices improvement.  She doesn't have FS9 though.  I'll run it again today to see if it's any faster.

To add to my previous.  Downloaded the OO defrag and found it even slower.  Did the DefragExpress again and am down to 56 mins and 89% optimisation so things are looking up.

Just because it says it's optimized, doesn't mean it is. The reason we simmers use O&O defrag is because it does things a certain way which optimizes the files for smoother gameplay and loading times. Nick can shed more light on this, as he's the one who really knows how it works Wink

If you're looking for FS9 performance, we recommend O&O defrag. If not, it's all up to you Smiley
