Hello,
Whenever I fly a long flight (30+ minutes), FSX usually locks up and nothing can be done to the computer... FSX just freezes and I try to minimize it, close it, bring up the desktop or task manager and FSX just taunts me on the screen laughing at me... LOL
My guess is that my CPU voltages are too low or that my GPU clocks are too high and is overheating, causing the system to lock up...
I've raised the fan speed on the GTX 260 (originial version) to 60% from its stock 40% and that has apparently reduced idle temps at least. I've also raised my CPU voltage (i7 920 @ 3.8) from 1.2875v to 1.33v and the RAM voltage to 1.66 from 1.64
I've tried these things only so far and haven't tested, but I'm still looking for ideas or even an answer here.
Thank you all for taking a look and I appreciated any responses,
Andy

Clear to Land... Are you
sure?

People with the 920's are finding that they need a higher QPI voltage to stay stable. I would set VCORE and QPI to 1.35 and see if that will boot and stay stable for 1hr in OCCT. If it checks out then optimize the voltages 1 notch at a time testing with OCCT. You will prob find that the QPI needs to stay at 1.35 or even higher. I wouldnt go over 1.38 for either voltage.

QPI is safe through 1.42 as long as DRAM is 1.60-1.69 (which is also safe)
I would make sure QPI is 1.37 and DRAM 1.65-1.66. If still locking, raise vcore. It usually takes 1.40 to to 4GHz on a 920. 3.8 is not going to be far behind that.. perhaps 1.35.

Thanks boys, I'll try those numbers after work. What worries me with setting vcore to 1.35 is the temps... Hopefully OCCT will pass with those numbers

hmmm.. well, if you dont have AC set to 79 in south florida that could present a problem as summer approaches.
there is one other HSF out there that may shave another c or 2 off the temp but but for the most part its equally matched to the TRUE 1366

actually.. I take that back.. they are about equal
It tough with these coolers... right now all the hardware sites are doin their 'just before school is out" BS routines for clocking heatsinks
The TRUE is still a solid contender and although there are a few others that may shave off 5c they require double fans @ 1500+ be used.. you could do that with the TRUE and probably shave off the temp

Hey Nick,
I just finished the OCCT test and it passed with a max temp of 66c (from RealTemp). I'm sitting comfortably on that with this TRUE cooler
I'm using the numbers you suggested. QPI/DRAM voltage @ 1.37v and vcore @ 1.35v
The GPU is still running comfortably at 60% fan speed with about 3-5c shaved off at idle!
The AC here is usually set to 72-75f so that should be fine. Now off to some FSX testing

Oh boy... It just did it again about 5 minutes ago.. even with the vcore raised quite a bit. So now I'm thinking it's the video card maybe. The frame on the screen will just be frozen, but the sound will keep on playing. However, I can't do anything on the screen at all but move the mouse cursor around.
I think I'm going to have to reinstall. Backing up now

video card clocked too high will do that too
Assuming heat is not a factor and CPU 3.8 and 1.4v with QPI/DRAM 1.42 does the same thing .. I would say either memory timing, possibly some skew needed for CPU or the video card clock

I would set QPI/DRAM @ 1.37, vcore 1.35, DRAM 1.66 and work
CPU Differential Amplitude: .800mv
CPU Clock Skew: (100ps if used to stablize clock)
IOH Clock Skew : (100ps if used to stablize clock)
careful with skew.. try amplitude alone first

I am having this exact same problem, FSX freezes after 10-15 minutes, but the sound in the background keeps playing (engines running, ATC talking), and when I go to task manager I observe that FSX.exe when down from 1 gig of memory used to just 76 MB and won't move not 1 MB more or less, if I click the X button in the upper right corner (I play windowed) the box asking me if Im sure to close FSX appears, but then no graphics whatsoever.
My system is E4500@2.8, 2G RAM, 8800 GT. I thought it was graphics driver related but I rolled back from 185 to 182 and I still keep getting the same freeze. Before I did full format of my system FSX was running well (damn virus, uninstalled antivirus to gain more HDD performance).
If somebody has an idea about this problem I would be extremely grateful as I'm having FSX withdrawals right now LOL.
Note: I set up my system using NickN guide.
