After reading about the advantages of using a second hard drive to keep things sorted, I'm about to give it a go.  My current drive, C:, will house the OS and FS9 while the addition will get the 'other stuff'.  The computer is networked online with my wifes but no email and most of my programs are FS2004 related.  What, besides the OS and FS9, should I keep on the C: and what should I move to the #2 drive?  Will the CLICK/DRAG/and DROP or CUT/PASTE methods work for this?

LOL

That works best if you MOVE MSFS to the fastest single drive in the system and make sure there are no partitions involved and leave the OS on the other

All you are doing is house cleaning which will help but that is not going to net you any real solid gains

Thanks Nick.  Both drives are Seagate 7200 SATA - one 80G the other 250G.  Another thing I've been considering is changing to another XP machine we have, but understand that moving the present C: drive (the 250) to be the C: in the other computer presents problems?

in your case where both are SATA (assuming both are SATAII) the fastest drive will be the 250 since the larger the platter the better the access performance due to basic geometry

The smaller the platter the slower the access perf

Moving a drive is not an option. Windows installed on the hardware from tower A. Unless the motherboard and hardware are identical in tower B and you plug into the same SATA port, migrating a drive will not work.. clean install

Afraid of that - it all sounded too convenient.  The 80G drive is C: in one computer and the 250G, with all my stuff, is C: in the other.  Would it be possible to place the 250G in the second drive bay with the 80G still the C:?  The 80G C: has XP OS so the one on the 250G would be superfluous.  Could that XP be removed from the 250G then move the files on it, other than FS9, to the 80G C: drive?  This is  starting to sound like one of those 'when you find yourself in a hole, stop digging' situations  Smiley.

If all you are moving is a drive to be used as a secondary then yes, that can be done and the os or entire 250 drive can be wiped.

Are the 2 towers of equal spec in terms of performance? I mean, you dont want to put all your eggs in the slow basket if the basket A is faster than Basket B to begin with.

Storage strategy is not a cure all for performance issues. It helps, no doubt about that but its nearly the last item on the totem pole to make sure is in order under the CPU/memory/video card/setup

It sounds like I'm still between a rock and a hard place.  All my files are on the 250G and I'll need them prior to any wiping.  Both computers have similar specs.  P4HT 3.0/3.4 4G/2GRAM XPpro.  The one I'm using is limited, first by being a Dell, then by being a SFF with puny PSU and potential cooling problems.  The other is an HP Tower.  Bigger case, almost twice the wattage PSU, more slots and equipment bays.  It'll be a shame not to use it but I'm really loathe to give up that bigger drive with all my FS9 goodies on it.

There are ways to back up and migrate FS9 but the addons may also have registry support that would be wiped out if you were to clean install Windows where FS9 was installed. There is no way to save addons that have registry support however the main FS9 install can be moved and the registry edited using tools available on the net.

The bottom line is if you are not savvy with such things you just bite the bullet and do a clean install with the setup that is best for the result.

Equal processor/memory/video support and moving to set up a different HDD layout.. hmmm   yea, you will get some relief but I just do not see it being anything spectacular.
