I’ve had the Asus G50vt-a2 laptop for a while now, and it has lived up to it's (your) reputation.

The question I have is what are safe temps? Here is what I got while playing Test Drive Unlimited.

Is 84C to high for the video card? (It’s really a GS, not a GT.)....It really likes to hang out in the 78c to 79c range when it’s worked hard. (I’m using the Benq G2400WD monitor – with an HDMI cable.)

...

Thanks for the recommendation on the laptop.

If you ever get to Ruston, La. the drinks are on me.

Cheers,
Jim

I figured you would like that unit..   he he he

its tough to know what is good and not good especially in laptops

Your temps are up there but remember, its a laptop so they will run warm

are you clocking anything or are those temps standard clocks?

make sure it can breathe.. some of those like to be raised a bit so air can get under them.. they make feet that pop out for that purpose

Everything is at stock settings.

I have it setting on top of a NZXT CRYO-LX cooler.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997340

It runs much cooler when doing everyday stuff.

Example:
Video card----50 C
THRM----------42 C
CPUs----------30/31 C
HDDs----------37/37 C

I think the prudent thing would be to build a new desktop for the daily heavy lifting. (I’m using an old P4-1.5)

It looks like the coming i7 975 with a 285 video card is the near future. (Is there anything coming….thats worth waiting for?)

My goals would be as follows: (Not in any particular order.)
1)      Learn to build and maintain a high end system….bios, over clocking, lapping, cooling, ect.
2)      Use it for FSX, Test Drive Unlimited (TDU), SolidWorks, general use, ect.
3)      I’m looking at the building, tuning, and maintenance as part of my educational experience.

Any guidance along these lines would be greatly appreciated. (Especially, things to read before starting the project.)

I dont know of any beginner tutorials in building.. they may be out there but I do not know of any to link to here.

As for whats coming.. although I have been a bit out of the loop lately I have not heard of anything new coming down the pike.. typically graphics card companies get new product on the market in June and then again in October/Nov..   then sneak a release in after xmas to try and suck up the xmas gift cash that gets passed around.

The next release of i7 will be a much more stable clocking version.. both lower voltage and higher clock. They will run cooler at the same clock speed the current i7 procs run.

There is really nothing spectacular coming I am aware of but I would wait to build with the next i7, either 950 or 975 and yes, pair it up with a 285 .. We all have to wait and see what may be coming next in video cards. Regardless of their tech-site hype, they must be tested in combat to know if they are effective in MSFS so even if something is announced it will take time to verify effectiveness after its release to market.
