Hi Simmers, the forum is quite new to me, my first time, but I had to contact you all about my problem, which is:-   I am running F/S 2004 in XP 3,  and decided to upgrade my "Adobe 7" to "Adobe 9" with devastating results, after downloading Adobe 9 all my aeroplanes had their airfiles removed and replaced with a corrupt self loading icon in its place, the result was no planes to operate including the opening cessna, F/S would try to load but without any complete planes, it was no go. Has anyone else come across this. I am back to normal now after using System Restore and reloading F/S.  Any suggestions how "Adobe 9" can be downloaded without this problem.

Hi Dobermann. This is caused by Adobe AIR which is included with Adobe Reader 9. Adobe AIR associates itself with all files with the AIR extension. The FS AIR files are not corrupt & should not affect your aircraft in any way. AIR files can still be read by FS & opened with the appropriate utility, like AirEd.

The new icon will do no harm. If you don't like it the easiest way to fix it would be to uninstall Adobe AIR.

PS. This is what the Adobe AIR icon looks like. It also changes the file description from AIR file to Installer Package.
...

The aircraft is unaffected.

Hi Haga,  Your P.S was a great help, yes, thats what my plane files looked like after downloading Adobe 9, obviously I must have done something wrong in order that my aircraft not to appear, I will try again.

Thanks again Hager, you're a gem.

Try it again. If installing Adobe Reader 9 changes those icons again you should be able to uninstall Adobe AIR separately from "Add or Remove Programs".

...

Adobe Reader 9 runs perfectly well without Adobe AIR installed.

Hi Haga,   Successfully installed Adobe 9-1 with current updates,  no problems this time.  Can't find Adobe Air uninstaller though, that window just tells me it is already installed.  But not to worry, I have no need now.
Many thanks for your guidance.   Dobermann.

Glad you fixed it.

If Adobe AIR is installed it should be on the list of currently installed programs from Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs. You can safely remove it from there if you wish.

I was wondering why all my .air files had a "self installer" icon now!

I haven't had any problems, but I just rebuilt my system a few days ago, and installed adobe before installed FS9.

No - Adobe Air is (was) a new item from the Adobe folks that a few (very few apparently) web sites use to display their web pages.

As far as I can tell very few websites have decided to use this.

It has nothing to do with the Adobe reader or PDF creator so it can be safely removed from your computer. This all "went down" a year or so ago and Adobe took a lot of heat because they included it in their automatic updates.

I think most of us now have changed the automatic updates settings so we are always asked first before anything is allowed to be installed.
