Stuttering with Core i7... (Read 517 times)

Ok, so we got a new computer for the lake, and we went all out:

Core i7 920, oc'd to 2.8 Ghz (software overclocking... I'm going to get a real motherboard for it on May 7th, as well as better cooling equipment).
6 Gigs of DDR3-1333
9800 GTX+
750 GB 7200 RPM HDD

And the only problem: I am getting stutters, even with frames locked, unlimited, anything.

I get 60 FPS locked, I've tried 35, etc, but it always stutters, even when it attains those frames!

I'm just about out of ideas here... Nick?

I've OC'd the graphics card too, by around 60 Mhz on the core clock (which made the shader clock go up by around 100 Mhz), and the memory clock by 75 Mhz, and it wielded a small gain...

I'm running at 1440x900, and I updated the drivers to the latest ones.

I don't know which Vista 64 drivers are the best right now, either.

Any help is appreciated!

SInce you did not make mention of the following we nee to know the basics

1) Did you defrag yet?
2) Have you disabled the proper items in the BIOS?
3) If using add on scenery, has it been layered properly, ie UT, scenery tech landclass ect.?
4) Have you properly configured nhancer?

There are so many things to set up to get FSX to purr I would go thru the list item by item and make sure everything is done in the way posted here: http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=29041

If after doing the above and you are still having problems it is one of 2 things, bad hardware of some sort or not tuned properly.

You should be able to get your CPU clock to at least 3.2 - 3.5 with no problems at all. Post back how you progress.

What am I supposed to disable in the BIOS?

I have done Nicks tweaks, nhancer, and defragged, in fact I did them all last night (and did them this morning, as well).

Hyperthreading, turbo mode, speed step , things like that. I will have to look at my bios for the full list. Ill try to find a post that tells which ones.  What are your slidders set at?

I set them to sparse and it still stutters.

Don't set them to sparse or even below dense. This screws up the priority system in FSX and will cause many problems. Remember that lower sliders do not mean better performance.

Set autogen complexity to max and density to very dense (dense in some areas depending on smoothness). Go into your FSX.cfg and set the "texture_bandwidth_mult" to 80 (default is 40). You might also want to add the bufferpools entry to see if that helps any:

at the end of the .cfg file, add this entry:

[BUFFERPOOLS]
PoolSize=100000000

Try that. If still stuttering, then read this thread:

Problems like you are having is why I just leave my stuff the hell alone...

My system: AMD Phenom 9500 cpu, 2 x eVGA e-GeForce 8800GTS Superclocked vidcards (640Mb DDR3 each), Zalman "sunflower" 9700 fan, Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 mobo, 4Gb G.Skill PC2-6400 DDR2 800Mhz RAM, 2 x Sony 20X DVD writers, Thermaltake Toughpower 850W modular p/s, 7 x 120mm fans, Windows XP Home and SP3, 2 x 250Gb Western Digital SATA-300 HDs (1 for apps, 1 for storage and precious files backup), CoolerMaster CM 690 case, NOD-32. Won't run FSX. Locks up a lot with FS9, too.

is you or your system

Go to the list and tune FSX correctly

And also try this application:

============================================================

This was introduced in another forum

Credit goes to Gizmo and Noel for bringing to our attention

This may be one of the all-time best tweaks to use however at this point testing is limited to a small number of users

Download this tool

http://rapidshare.com/files/205205148/FPS_Limiter_0.2.rar

or from here

http://files.filefront.com/FPS+Limiter+02r...;/fileinfo.html

Unrar/unzip

Be aware that where you place the folder must remain or it will break its use and you will need to reconfigure the bat file

USE:

Run FPS_Limiter_GUI.jar and click SEARCH EXECUTABLE

browse for and select FSX.exe

set frame limit to 30 under MAXIMUM FPS

Click CREATE BAT

Once complete close the interface and use the created file: fsx.exe.limited.bat to start FSX (double click it)

set frame lock to UNLIMTED in FSX and use the AG slider to tune

You MUST have JAVA installed to use that interface

http://www.java.com/en/

Now here is the deal... this attacks the UNLIMITED FRAME LOCK problem related to Vsync introduced by Aces in SP1/SP2. Instead of tuning the FRAME LOCK you will tune the AUTOGEN slider for smooth results where you are flying. Leave the FSX frame lock slider at UNLIMITED at all times.

You can fine tune this app as well...

I found 30 was the sweet spot for all occasions. I would suggest no less than 24 and no more than 30 but start with 30.

FSX must always be started by clicking the created command line BAT file.. NOT the FSX desktop icon

The issue this tool attacks is the one introduced with SP1/SP2 whereby Vsync creates HI/LOW stammer in the frame rate. Using this tool as posted will allow the full priority of UNLIMITED to the application by the hardware but governs the frame rate stammer.
