A sad day on Saturday when Tom Duffy's TBM Avenger made an emergency landing and burned to the ground.   Sad
The pilot landed the plane and jumped out while it was still moving.  He received 2nd & 3rd degree burns but will be o.k.!!

Here is a link to the local newspaper article.

If it's any consolation, at least there are still a decent number around in airworthy condition (about 40, similar to the Spitfire), and hopefully still more in the future with the utilisation of ex fire bombing aircraft.

If I'm not mistaken, that's the same Avenger I took this video of back in 2006.

I'll have to snoop around to see if I took a photo of it.

He really did a great job!! Glad he's going to recover- he earned it. Imagine trying to land that thing when you have to keep your hands on the stick, in the flames in order to do so!  Shocked

As for the plane: it's sad, but hey, she had more fun than she was designed to... a long, happy life. And maybe better that than the scrappers.

A great shame and lucky it was not fatal. I have to smile at the caption below the first picture, "Crews discuss how to move the plane that burned on the Millville airport runway Saturday night."..........I would suggest that not much though was required, just a bulldozer and a bucket loader!
