I was in the process of deleting a very large file (21Gb) when a virus & spyware program (Threatfire) came up telling me that some kind of hostile action was afoot. I clicked to quarantine and kill the threat, and proceeded with my deletion. All of a sudden my background picture was lost and now all my icons have little gray backgrounds behind them. How do I get rid of all the little background boxes? I know it can be done-- I did it eons ago in Win98. I think I may have dome in in XP, but it was probably in early May of 2005. Been a long time, for sure...

Everything seems to be OK, just the icons have the gray areas behind them...

My system: AMD Phenom 9500 cpu, 2 x eVGA e-GeForce 8800GTS Superclocked vidcards (640Mb DDR3 each), Zalman "sunflower" 9700 fan, Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 mobo, 4Gb G.Skill PC2-6400 DDR2 800Mhz RAM, 2 x Sony 20X DVD writers, Thermaltake Toughpower 850W modular p/s, 7 x 120mm fans, Windows XP Home and SP3, 2 x 250Gb Western Digital SATA-300 HDs (1 for apps, 1 for storage and precious files backup), CoolerMaster CM 690 case, NOD-32. Won't run FSX. Locks up a lot with FS9, too.

You might try and do a restore and see if that helps.

I did a Restore for another reason earlier today. I don't want to do it again for reasons of time available to me. I know you can adjust the color of the background and how the screen looks. I just cannot remember how to do it.

The problem:

On your desktop, right click and select properties. Select the tab desktop. Change the backgroundcolour. Click apply and OK.

Simple isn't it?

That's not the entire problem. The problem is that some icons have the boxes around them while others do not.  I want NO boxes. There has to be a way to get no boxes around all the icons...

Face it, as long as you have a computer, you will have problems. Now as to your current problem try setting icon size to medium or small.
Another suggestion would be to use TweakUI to rebuild your icons.

Where do I start with these suggestions? The word "tweak" scares me...

Try this first. The problem icons look like Desktop shortcuts. You might have to change the icons individually. Right-click on one of them & select Properties. Then click on the Change Icon button. Choose the icon you want to use for that shortcut from the selection.
