hello,

after some negotiations with my family, the possibility of me getting an i7 system is now really present  Cheesy Cheesy

so i called up my usual supplier and he offered me the following parts:

(mind that this is a partial upgrade only, i will not be changing my GPU,  nor HDs)

Intel Core i7 920 2.66ghz cache L3 8MB socket 1366 CPU
Intel DX58SO  x58 Mobo
3x Corsair 2GB DDR3 1333mhz

as for the rest, i shall keep my original parts, which i feel are still good for the time being

GeForce 8800GTX 768MB GPU
SevenTeam 750Watt RMS PSU
Seagate Barracuda 640GB 7200Rpm HD
Maxtor 200GB 7200Rpm HD
Sattelite 4-bay case
3x LG 1952h LCDs and TH2Go
and the rest

so, these three new parts (CPU, Mobo and RAM) add up to 1542.34USD

what do you guys think?

i can't provide any information about memory timings as of yet, but i'm  looking on it

please let me know if you have any suggestions
oh, and i'm still not sure about OS's, which would be better in this application? WinXP 64 or Vista 64?

Cheers

it's an intel motherboard... won't let you clock. if you want the performance you'd expect, you'd need to OC it. for that kind of money, you can get something much better than that. look into the P6T Deluxe motherboard and some DDR3 1600 memory so you have room to overclock. don't forget your CPU cooler

Over the past few months the subject of I-7 has been extremely well discussed on this site. The components that are consistently recommended that you are looking for are these.

I-920 cpu
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202

mobo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131346

memory
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227365

on newegg as of 2/19/2009  those are currently going to set you back $738.97 with free shipping included.

for that you could upgrade to the i-940 processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115201

bringing your total to $1009.97 usd. and still well under the quoted price from your normal supplier and still have free shipping. I do not know if Newegg ships internationally, sorry.

Therein lies the problem my friend... i happen to live in Brazil, land of all taxes....

even if newegg shipped internationally, which i don't think it does  Sad
i'd still have to pay for a truckload of taxes once it got here... which would amount to MORE than the value of the parts themselves  Shocked

i will see about the motherboard... i'll try to get the Asus one... if not, well, overclocking has never been a hobby of mine... and i'll have to take what i can get

the memory is also already as expensive as can be... i can't afford 1600mhz modules...  Sad

but i heard that this particular mobo is optimized to work with 1333mhz modules... and i should get good performance with it...

well, i'll call right now and see what i can do

Cheers

well, i called up my supplier... it seems the motherboard comes bundled with the CPU... so there's no way of changing that for another one without substantially increasing the price

but i did change the memories to 1600 DDR3 Corsair modules, a 20% increase in memory performance for 18.5% more money, seemed worth the upgrade to me, so i went ahead and did it...

well, that's the system now... i hope it works out ok

also, i heard that overclocking IS possible on this mobo, but it's not as easy as it would be had i had the Asus one... anyways, OC'ing has never been a hobby of mine... especially given the price of hardware here... i never had the guts to risk them should i do something wrong

thanks for the information, guys  Smiley

Cheers
