...there you go Chums...

Something different..

The Famous "Route 66"... Wink...!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_66

After travelling Route 66 from Santa Monica to Chicago, and back, many times in my classic Peterbilt Tractor-Truck, courtesy of; "18 Wheels of Steel across America", and "18Wheels of Steel Pedal to the Metal", I'm now going to "Fly" the same route, following the same roads, using my USA Maps, and Google Road Maps, on my Desk-top, and following my Flight Plan on FS Navigator.

For overall versatility, I will be using my trusty Default Beech Baron 58, which I have fitted with the Turbochargers from the Baron TC model, for extra speed and power.

I will select my own VFR Weather for the flights, (I never fly in bad weather!), and Fuel consumption will be calculated between stops.

It will be fun to drop off now and again and learn, (Google), more information about the various Regions on my way, (as I always do!)..... Smiley...!

I will be using the Sim V Multiplayer Server and Flight Planner, so I may come across some of my Sim V Chums en-route?.. Roll Eyes...!

I have got the "Google" road map displayed full size on my desktop...
(I press the "Windows Key" to toggle between my desktop map and FS 2004 whilst flying).

I use FS Navigator to display the Airfields en-route, record my daily Flight Plan, and obtain my Radio Beacon frequencies for navigation.

The same route planning can be done with the FS 2004 GPS Map..Wink...!

Its interesting to check the accuracy of the FS 2004 road system....its pretty accurate...so far!...Wink...!

I have to detour slightly to locate a nearby Airfield for re-fuelling, and then continue to follow the road again.

The complete journey is going to take a while, using an hour or so of flight each day, but its a good exercise to learn all about each State and Town that I pass through...(I love History and Geography/Geology!).. Kiss...!

Route 66 was/is very popular with Motorcyclists and I have always wished I could have done it...
...but its too late now... Cry...
...Imaginary Flight-simming is the best I can come up with now!... Roll Eyes...!

Paul..."I get my kicks...on Route 66!"... Grin... Grin...!

...second leg from Needles (KEED) to Flagstaff (KFLG) following Highway 40, over some pretty desolate landscape...

...its difficult to imagine anyone wanting to live in Arizona!... Shocked...!

Mostly desert, apart from the very occasional "Green" spot!

En route, passed a very interesting place; "Ford Motor Company Arizona Proving Ground". It is represented exactly in FS 2004...>>>

Have a peek at 58AZ Airfield!

And my Route so far...along Highway 40.....>>>

There always seems to be a lot of very secretive Military activity going on in the Arizona Desert!... Shocked...!

Making slow progress... Roll Eyes... Grin...!

Paul,

I have had the pleasure of actually driving that route......a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

The Needles area in the summer is one hotter'n hell place.  I remember the car overheating...and the coolant and radiator was basically FINE.  Had to wait until later in the day to finish the cross desert drive.

Thanks for jogging up some fond old memories.  Smiley

John...

Route 66 (Highway 40)...the Motorcyclists Freedom Route!

One of my greatest pleasures in the MS Flight Simulators is the ability to Tour a selected area at low altitude in General Aviation, Piston Prop Aircraft, and learn all about it, courtesy of various (Google) Maps, closely study its geography and geology, and learn about its History and Population, care of "Wikipedia" etc...Wink...!

I am ably to learn about all areas of the World without actually being able to visit them in person!

Viva la Flight Sim!... Smiley...!

Hey Paul, when and where are you doing this flight?

I would love to get in on a few of these sessions. I would like to fly the whole route you have pictured above and try to catch up to where you are presently. Smiley

Hello Shane...Wink..!

I pop into Multiplayer now and again, (in between Shopping, Cooking, Hoovering and Dusting, etc..etc...), Study the Map, File a Flight Plan, and take off from Airfields in my Route 66, using  my Default Trusty Beech Baron 58.
Each Hop is around 150-200 miles, so its quite a slow progress, in between keeping by wary eye on the Gravy, etc, simmering on my trusty Gas Cooker...!

I never spot anyone else on Multiplayer during my Flights...so its very quiet..Wink...!

Paul...G-BPLF...FS 2004...and some tasty Cheese and Pickle Sandwiches... Cool...!

Completed the flight from Flagstaff (KFLG) to Albuquerque (KABQ) via the awful Arizona Desert!

Mile after mile of nothing but red sand!

Then hopped over to the fantastically named "Santa Rosa Route 66" Airfield (Q58) in New Mexico, closely following the Route 66 Highway, leaving the amazing mountain ranges surrounding Albuquerque behind!

Next hop will be from Santa Rosa  (Q58) to Amarillo (KAMA) some 145 miles away...and entering into...TEXAS..... the land of Cowboys.... Cows.... and Red-Necks!

.... Grin...!

...still following the famous; "Route 66" Highway!

I'm beginning to see why I spend most all of my time flying around Sunny California... Wink....

...just completed the Hop from Amarillo (KAMA), to Oklahoma City (KOKC) across Western Texas...

...finally entering the U.S. Mid-West...flat as a Pancake in every direction, dotted with the occasional small Town!.... Cry...!

Certainly a disappointment after touring the exciting landscape of the Pacific West!

Oh well....ploughing on...and Route 66 is still below me, busy with traffic, and amazingly easy to follow... Smiley...!

...never fear, John...

I'm getting the flight completed before the nasty Winds blow in the Midwest!...Wink...!

Swapped over from the Beech King Air at Oklahoma Airport (KOKC) to my Trusty Beech Baron 58 (with its more powerful exhaust driven Turbochargers) for the next leg of the low level flight to Tulsa (KTUL), this time with the old Route 66 shown on the Map as Highway 44 (changing from Highway 40).

I filed my usual Flight Plan, but after leaving Oklahoma Airport I had to deviate very slightly (naughty!) to locate Highway 44, but having picked it up it was easy to follow, overflying an aptly named airstrip called "Neversweat" (1OK0)... Grin.... Grin...

(You come across some amusing Airfield names during your flights!)... Wink...

Approaching Tulsa Airport I dialled up the ILS Frequency 110.30 for a nice gentle landing on Runway 36R... Kiss...!

Refuelled the Baron and cleaned the Oklahoma Flies off the Prop and Wings, and parked her up ready for the next hop....after a nice meal and a rest... Smiley...!

Paul...G-BPLF...FS 2004...FS Navigator...and two cans of Shell's finest Oil... Cool...!

Interesting little flight today...

Finally leaving Oklahoma for the State of Missouri!...!

Checked my Maps...

Set a Flight plan from Tulsa (KTUL), to Springfield (KSGF), a distance of some 132 miles, so a nice gentle flight to take in the countryside.

Followed Highway 44 to Miami town, then after leaving Oklahoma headed into Missouri for Joplin town.
Skirted around Joplin Airfield and headed for Mount Vernon town..

A quick swing round, still following the road, dialled up Springfield NDB (404.0), and the ILS Frequency (109.90), for Runway 02.

Checked my landing procedures....with; "Don't forget to lower your wheels!" being top of the list!...Wink...!

Tracked to the runway for a perfect landing...(as I do!), then refuelled at the pumps, checked the Oil again, and parked my Trusty Baron up, ready for another tasty meal in the Airfield's Café.

An excellent Trip in the Mid-West Countryside... Smiley...!

Paul....G-BPLF...FS 2004...FS Navigator...and a nice cool Beer... Cool...!

P.S. I have an alternative Road Scenery system installed, which includes busy "Traffic", making it easy to track major Highway systems...Wink...!

P.P.S...Sorry Chums....Reference to Montana should read...Missouri....(It was the "MO" that fooled me!

Today's Hop from Springfield (KSGF) to St Louis (KSTL).
Still in the State of Missouri.
180 Miles over unbelievably FLAT landscape!
Not a single landmark to be seen in any direction, so I had to rely heavily of my trusty Bendix-King Radio Stack, tuning into various VOR and NDB Radio Beacons, (and Route 66 below), to guide me in the right direction!

The trip took a speedy one hour...so you can guess my cruise? speed... Shocked...consumed a LOT of AVGAS!.... Grin...!

Parked up at the busy Airport of St Louis*, getting my Baron serviced ready for the next Leg of my journey along Route 66... Kiss...!

Paul...G-BPLF...FS 2004...FS Navugator...and a lesson on pronunciation!...Wink...>>>>

* St Louis: Pronounced "Saint LOO-EE"
NOT Saint LOO-ISS!... Sad...!
....the "S" on the end is "silent"... Wink...!

Its a "French" name...and also my Middle name...so I should know!...Wink...!

Think: The Jazz Trumpeter; "Louis Armstrong"...Loo-ee Armstrong!

Here endeth today's English, (and French), lesson. Remember it!

.... Grin...!

King Louis XIV of France was/is always referred to as King Loo-ee the 14th of France....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_XIV_of_France

Referring to him as King Loo-iss the 14th of France at the time would have resulted in a speedy trip to meet Madam Guillotine... Shocked...

You know, i've never met an American who didn't pronounce it as "Lewiss". I'm not arguing whether or not it's the correct way of saying it, but it is what it is. Wink

I think you just have to accept it as one of those differences between America & England. "Two nations separated by a common language". Wink

There isn't an 'R' , and there is only one 'G' in Chicago. Pronounced shi-KAW-goh. And the proper pronunciation of Illinois is 'ill-uh-NOY', although 'ill-uh-noise' is common... Wink

Have you checked out the latest feature of Dictionary.com? By clicking the [HEAR] button you can hear the "correct" pronunciation of a lot of words. Much better than trying to spell them phonetically.

Chicago
Illinois
St Louis

..right...

...after a spot of fun leg-pulling with pronunciations, its time to chase Route 66 up to Chicago again... Wink...!

Chicago is rather too far away for a complete Hop today, so this time it will be a 123 mile flight from Saint Louis (KSTL)  to Bloomington (KBMI) with my Beech Baron.

Filed my usual flight Plan, tuned my Nav Radios to the Radio Beacon Frequencies en route, as there are very few landmarks in this part of the State.

Got a little lost after leaving Saint Louis and slightly missed tracking to Springfield (KSPI)...(slight error in my flight plan), re-checked my Map, and changed direction to head for Logan County Airfield NDB (KAAA), and low and behold, Route 66 suddenly came into view again!
I was no longer lost!
Tuned into Bloomington Airfield, and made a smooth landing on Runway 02... Smiley...!

Re-fuelled at the Pumps, checked my Oil, parked my trusty Baron up, headed for the Airfield Café for a hot meal, and ready for the next Route 66 Hop in the direction of Chicago!.. Wink...!

Paul...G-BPLF...FS 2004...and resting in Illinois... Cool...!

Good Morning Chums!..... Cool....

The last leg of my Route 66 Sentimental Journey, from Santa Monica (KSMO) on the South West Pacific Coast, to Chicago (KORD), in the North East, on the banks of Lake Michigan, closely following the old Route 66 Highway, via its more recent Highway number changes.

Today I left Bloomington (KBMI) for the last leg to Chicago (KORD). A 100 mile twisty trip, tracking Pontiac, Dwight Juliet Regional and Boingbrook Airfields, to dial up Chicago ILS on 110.10 and land gently on Runway 04R. and finally park my trusty Beech Baron 58 up, after lovingly patting her Twin Continentals for a truly reliable, and enjoyable Trip across the Mountains and Plains of the U.S.!

I planned my route, observing my Maps, and filing Flight Plans, and dropped off at various Airfields en route for overnight stops.

Following the Highway was no problem in FS 2004 with the route being a major Highway and easily spotted from the air, being always busy with heavy traffic mostly consisting of Articulated Tractor/Truck units, transporting heavy loads between Los Angeles and Chicago.

So, there you go, Chums...

Route 66. The favourite route taken by modern Motorcycle and Motor Car enthusiasts, memorising the famous Highway as it used to be in days long past!

...

Long may its Tarmac exist!... Smiley...!
