Who ever though Firefox could be even faster than what it already is? Well, my friend came over the other day, and he showed me how fast his firefox was. I asked him how he did it, said he tweaked it. So I went online looking for Firefox tweaks and found this little site with a couple of tweaks I can do. Well, needless to say I did them  Grin

This thing is super fast.. I feel like I'm running on T1  Cool

Seems to be much faster, though I would be interested to hear NickN's input on this.

I was also hoping he'd stop by and drop a line on this. all my other internet settings are as he suggested, these are the only different things.

This is a very simple edit of the number of times the ports will be slammed with update requests.. its similar to editing the TCPIP registry stack for

HKEY_USERS.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
"MaxConnectionsPerServer"=dword:00000010
"MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server"=dword:00000010

Its no secret.. its been around for a long time and FF tweaks require changes too since its not and never was a safer browser and simply ports out through windows networking system

LOL!!!

http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=2448

I do not use FF but apparently they are porting and what this does is hammer the port with requests. What will eventually happen if it has happened already at many websites is the admin will limit the requests per IP which is why some sites may be faster and others do not seem like they have changed.

Overall it can help but those admins who are wise to the hacks and tweaks make sure their systems are not pounded buy the public in high traffic periods

Have I misunderstood what you have said? I ask because pretty much everyone seems to think that FF is a safer internet interface than EE??

Yes Matt

you have been misinformed by the FF marketing parade and MS haters around the world.. something I posted probably 2 years or so ago on these forums and repeated a few times… and no one seemed to believe me..

FF is no more or less secure than IE and never has been

ever

by the way.. they all have their holes and they all get patched the same eventually

There is no difference

but I will say this.. with FF you dont think you are getting a free browser for nothing? do you?

There is a reason why such products are released and use fear and hatred to generate use.. they get something back and that is your browser habits

Nothing illegal about that either but none the less this horse manure that has been planted over the years about FF being safe and taking you away from being monitored is just that... manure

so enjoy what ever browesr you like and make sure the system is correctly secure with NOD32 or something that you get what you pay for in protection without killing system resources

Nick,

I remember the old comments you made on this subject years ago.  It was THE reason I never bothered to switch over from IE.  Waste of time.

One has to consider the sources one's infomation comes from.  The ole', "I read it on the Net from the company that makes the software so it MUST be true" kind of approach is sure to lead one astray.   Grin

Anyone who has spent even a short while reading your posts and taking your advice rapidly gets the idea that you know exactly what you are talking about when it comes to Microsoft's software and computers.

Thanks for so freely sharing your expertise with the SimV community.

You wanna know what is really hilarious? (and sad)

All the MS haters out there using the premise that IE is not secure and MS spies on you.. FF was made specifically for collecting browser habits so the people that bought into that parade are being looked at more than MS ever looked at anyone. IE does not bounce around and ping through proxy systems or ports to record browser habits periodically and actually respects the users privacy.

Its really amazing how much fear and hate drive something.. like the last 8 years

no difference

No matter what you do Windows pings home base from time to time.. FF makes sure its makers get what they want

There is no such thing as a free lunch and I really have to laugh my arse off when I read how much safer and less monitored people feel on FF

Thanks Nick. Personally I just prefer the FF screen to that of IE, though I am/was on of the fooled Roll Eyes. As for browser habits, they are waisting their time if they think that sending me an advert is going to make me buy anything.....................they have not met my wife and here saving prowess  Grin Grin

Like I said Matt

Use whatever browser you like.. the defense line in any computer is the installed AV and browser scanner in it or other products which may work along side such as SpyBots installs

Malware can get into a system even with all of the above in order no matter what browser in use the designer is up to date on their code and patches.. usually it comes in through the user allowing something anyway which nothing is going to stop unless it has a defined signature for spy or virus

Even the firewall programs out there are pretty much a joke unless you are a corporation and need that kind of firewall support and even then, they use hardware firewalls with 'traps'.. this silly software firewall junk is just that.. junk as the Windows SP2/SP3/Vista firewall is just fine

Nick,
I have been a firefox fanboy since 0.8. I switched initially because of the fact it didn't use ActiveX, but have stayed because it is a great overall browser. I no longer hold onto the "FF is more secure than IE" as each have their security holes. The number one thing that keeps me with FF is the fact it complies to most internet standards, unlike IE. At the present point in time, IE7 scores a puny 14/100 on Acid3 while the current FF scores 71/100 and the next beta release scores 93/100.

So far, you are the only person to say that Firefox secretly collects your browsing habits and uses them. At the moment firefox monitors how many browsers check for automatic updates as a way to monitor how many people use firefox and have a project in the pipelines to monitor browser usage, but it is completely open to the public and it is elective as well, if you don't want it monitored you can so choose. Also, firefox has recently stopped collecting unique identifiers on crash reports to increase end user privacy. Source: http://blogs.zdnet.com/open-source/?p=3274

I don't blindly follow what everyone on the internet says, I like to track down my own info. As yet I have not found a single reliable source that agrees with you in saying that firefox collects this information and returns it home. If you can provide some proof to your statements I will listen, but at the moment I'm marking it down as a MS fanboy slandering the competition.

LOL!

Fanboy, huh

I’m the first in line with a paddle when MS messes up. I was there with Vista (still am) and I was there for just about every other blunder and screw job so that fanboy comment goes right where it belongs

*flush*

As for the rest of it.. what makes removing a ‘unique identifier’ from an error report more secure and not allow 'any' information to be collected?

Excuse me.. Mcfly! Does than mean up until last month you WERE being identified and does the EULA allow for it?

OK.. take it way.. now, whats stopping them from grabbing a snapshot of traffic for demographics based on .. .hmmm lets see, I can only name about 20 categories without the UID which can deliver some grade A USDA choice cut information.

Tell ya what..  you enjoy Firefox as its no more secure and no less invasive than any MS trick out there over the years..  but MS did back off IE especially with all the hub-bub in EU about it around Vista.

What if I were to tell you some real slick FF tricks were looked at as a possible models for MS SEARCH off the desktop? Would you believe that?

Do I care?

No!    LOL!

Would I be stupid enough to risk my connections from the past or the agreements I have from consulting in the past on projects by posting direct data or information?

No!   LOL!

I dont protect or 'fanboy' MS but you sure do like FF and go so far as to accuse me of slander.. with flat-out nothing to back it up either!

Thats the fanboy spirit!

I got a better idea, lighten up and just enjoy what you like to use.

I do   Smiley

I'm using Google's new Chrome, and have to say, i'm thoroughly enjoying it  Smiley

it's probably no more safe than any other, nor do i care... i never had much spyware trouble, or viruses for that matter... so i'm quite comfortable with my security settings

i use Chrome because it's fast... not connectivity-wise fast (it's just as fast browsing as any other)... but it's light on the system, it comes up just as you click it's icon... no load time (for me, FF was getting relly slow)

and i like the way this browser handles tabs... and it has cool features  Cool

Cheers
