WINNERS, WINNERS, WINNERS

Judge ManuelL hath spoken! and his choices are :

Mictheslik!

...

A masterpice of a screenshot in my opinion. The two cloud layers form an nice background. The lower cloud layer opens up just wide enough to reveal the breathtaking scenery. The emphasis of the picture is still on the plane, as the impact of the scenery is softened by a haze layer. The angular horizon line gives this picture high vitality.

CONGRATULATIONS Mic!!!!

In second place, SeanTK

...

An excellent silhouette shot. The colours of the sky are just beautiful and the trees are very crisp and have great detail. The plane is viewed in just the right angle to reveal the small gap between the wing and the aileron. It was a bold decission to put the subject of the competition (the plane) right in the corner, but with this shot it works great.

In third, Jankees

...

This picture is taken from just the right angle to emphasize the elegant outline of the Constellation. The bare metal colour harmonizes very well with the pale blue sky and the reflections are just beautiful.

I would like to thank you all for posting such wonderful shots. It has not been easy to pick the winners. I have looked through the pictures many times choosing different favourites every two minutes.

Finally I would like to give a special mention to gtirob01, who not only posted a picture but wrote a small article on the history of the aircraft displayed. I hope this shot and text will find their way into the Aviation Museum section.

Thanks and best regards,
Manuel"

Nice work on a great comp!

Cheers

Stupid Question:

Just how late are you willing to go as far as aircraft are concerned. I know of a few that I would consider "classic" but they entered service in the late 1960's, and usually had the most success in the mid 70's.
I know of people that could go either way on this issue, so I am looking for a definitive answer for this contest. I would personally not go past the year 1970, if using the "first entered service" qualification but I was just curious.

Boeing 727 (1963)
Boeing 737-200 (1968)
Boeing 747 (Pan Am was the first to use them in January of '70. Obviously the 100 model.)
Boeing 707 (roughly 1958)
BAC 1-11 (roughly 1961, but its prime was late 60's- early 70's)
HS121 Trident (about the same timeframe as the BAC)
Tupolev Tu-124 (1962)
Tupolev Tu-134 (1967)

The previous is just a sample, and I tried to reference first operational years with airlines, not just prototype flights.

Thank you for any clarification,

-Sean

I just spent all morning shooting pics of that plane. Cheesy

Judging from his example shots, I think RichardH has it about right.

Is the Concorde to late to be considered for this competition? It's first flight was late '60s, so it's probably a no. I just wanted ot make sure.

It's at Rotterdam, I downloaded this GREAT AI pack from California Classics(thanks Sean!), it put some very nice classic AI prop planes/jet planes/ passenger helos/ military transports/ and GA planes all throughout the world, The downside is that in some places you can see 747s & 777s sitting next to connies and 707's, but at places like Kai Tak, where I had no traffic at all, it's all golden age aviation. Cool

Nothing in the rules say it has to be real Smiley, I was just a little surprised that it may have been a real one, or even used elsewhere. I think this is one of the best looking default liverys in the game. Wink

I disagree with you, Shane. Although ManuelL uses the word historic, the definition of historical states:

"having once existed or lived in the real world, as opposed to being part of legend or fiction or as distinguished from religious belief. . . ."

"A Forgotten One..."

...

The Convair 990

The CV-990 was a first-generation jet airliner that competed with the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8.  Nicknamed "Coronado," it was originally developed by Consolidated-Vultee, which later changed its name to Convair and was eventually bought out by General Dynamics. The 990 first flew in 1961.

Essentially, the 990 was an upgraded version of the Convair 880, designed after United turned down the 880 and American asked for an improved aircraft to serve as the flagship of its Astrojet fleet. The resulting plane was (and still is) one of the fastest jetliners ever produced, able to cruise at 615 mph. This was accomplished by powerful engines, a narrow body, and special "shock pods" on top of the wings.

However, the 990's high performance came at a cost. The streamlined fuselage could only hold 110 passengers, compared to the 707 and DC-8's capacity of 150. The wing pods were originally intended to hold fuel, but the added weight caused them to vibrate dangerously at high speeds, so they had to be left hollow. This gave the 990 a comparatively dismal operating range (3000 miles on the outside), and made its operation a losing proposition for most airlines, killing sales. American, the largest customer, ended up replacing a $25 million down payment with 25 Douglas DC-7's, each valued at less than half a million dollars.

The 990 program ended as a write-off for General Dynamics: by some estimates, they lost over $150 million in the whole ordeal, not a small sum for a company reporting $2 billion in annual sales. Some planes were pulled off of the assembly line half-completed in a vain effort to recover costs. Convair never made another civil transport, and its defense contracts were seriously scarred for some time.

My specs... A hard drive, motherboard, graphics card, some memory, a keyboard, mouse, and monitor - in other words, nothing special.

Nothing in the rules say it has to be real

I disagree with you, Shane. Although ManuelL uses the word historic, the definition of historical states:

"having once existed or lived in the real world, as opposed to being part of legend or fiction or as distinguished from religious belief. . . ."

Wow, it's not every day that you have the dictionary thrown at you. Grin
Good point though.  Smiley Smiley

so you think i should be disqualified?

The competition suggests historical aircraft, not liveries.....the DC3 was certainly a real aircraft so the shot stands Wink

Now...less arguing, more speculating over these fantastic shots...what a bumper crop this week.....wouldn't like to be Manuel....Wink

No, sir! You should not be disqualified. It was not my intention to discredit your screenshot or anyone elses, much less beating Shane over the head with a dictionary.

Where is Shane? Where are the winning shots? Shane is usually right on top of things. Hope he is not having computer problems.

I believe he is transitioning to a new internet service, so he may not be able to connect until all of that is taken care of.

An honorable mention works for me!

Figured some may not know what the 990 was, much less any history of it. So I thought I'd include some of that history with the shot!

My specs... A hard drive, motherboard, graphics card, some memory, a keyboard, mouse, and monitor - in other words, nothing special.
