First, let me say that I know just enough to be dangerous.  My video card (an old Radeon X300) has two outputs - DVI I dual link and S video.  My LCD monitor has two inputs - DVI D dual link and VGA.  My first assumption would be to connect the DVI I from the video card to the DVI D on the monitor but there doesn't seem to be any such cable (DVI I male to DVI D male) anywhere on the 'net.  Before the video card, I was VGA to VGA and all was well.  Now, using a cable that's  DVD D. both ends,  there're random distortion lines ending in full screen distortion.  Not good and my monitor is going into 'power save' a couple of minutes after boot though settings are for two hours.  I've ordered a Belkin splitter which has DVD I male on one end and the choice of DVD D male or VGA male on the other.  Tell me I'm headed for sunlight.

DVI-I outputs support both analog and digital monitors.(although you wouldn't be gaining anything, just analog VGA in a different connector), but the monitor only supports digital input. You should be alright just using a regular DVI cable.
