I am installing a TRU120 on my i7 940 with a P6T deluxe MOBO. My question is, my MOBO's CPU fan connection is a 4 pin and my TRu's fan is a 3, is it OK to hook it to the 4 pin?

yes

The only difference is there will be less speed control .. it will still run fine

be sure to fit the plug correctly.. it should only go on one way

If you wish to change the fan to one that is specific to the board and have better control over the fan speed then you need to get a 120MM PWM (4pin) fan and replace the one on the TR120 with it

They are sold at most online hardware outlets...

The fan came with the HS as a kit combo. I wonder why they dont include the fan with the power management pin also? Man that sucker is big! So far everything is going fine putting it together. I am taking my time with it  I Have a few more connections to make then Im done for the night. I will see if she POSTs Friday. I am really excited with what I have read about OC it, I got the 940 w/1600 OCZ Gold ram 8-8-8-24. Hopefully I can hit 4.0 provided I can keep the heat down, will have to wait and see. I found a great article today that did a nice job of explaining the different settings to make and how they work with each other. Im ready to get off the work bench and back in the air. I transformed a 2000.00 pile of boxes into a computer!

that transformation of boxes into a computer is a great feeling, especially after you're playing all the games and doing everything you wanted to do with what you bought and everything is running smooth and as it should be... I love it  Wink

I have the ultra-120 extreme for my i7 920 and at 3.7ghz it keeps it at under 79c full load.. usually 75-77c.. that's with the stock fan  Wink

I did not order that unit.. I had them ship me the bracket for my original 120 which I had purchased the fan for (the originals did not come with any fan) so I was unaware for the lack of PWM support until recently.

I did shoot off an email the TR but did not get anything back.. I told them no x58 motherboard has a 3 pin CPU connector and I was quite surprised to see they used that fan.

You shoud not have any problems hitting 4GHz on the 940 but do be aware the only temp monitor software able to read i7 correctly right now is the beta version of Realtemp... v2.90 or above

The i7 has a TJMAX of 100c so your max temp under a load test wants to be 80c or less

Here is what they told me?

Dear Jim:

Many thanks for your mail and support,
Our Fan is made with 3 pins,
so the 3 pin connector will be fine,
the 4 pins are for fans that with adjustable speeds,
which are rare in the market.
Yes and our fan will run at 1600rpm all time,
it was not a 4 pin fan so it can't be adjusted.

Best Regards.

Nick, does that mean I should use a 3 pin chassis connection and not the CPU connection?

No!
The system will not see a CPU fan and shut down thinking it failed

They just mean it will run 100%

I did not email sales.. I emailed their dev department..   Im going to send another off tomorrow however that excuse about not many fans and the fan should run 1600 all the time is horse manure

I have a PWM fan than runs off a fluid dynamic bearing so at 1400 RPM you can not hear it at all... it has a top speed of nearly 3000 RPM too and has a high CFM rating so I have mine set to run 1400 at idle (dead silent) and only increase as the CPU heats up

mine is dead silent unles I am using the system for a CPU intensive process

Nick, great information.

Like jwenham, I am putting the finishing touches on my i7 920 build (the last bit, 6gb of the fast Mushkin RAM, should be delivered this afternoon). I also got the newer TRUE 120 that comes with the three wire fan. When I'm ready to OC, I'll replace that fan.

May I ask which PWM fan you are using?

Thanks,
...jim

No worries if you can't find the info on it, Nick. At least I know what to look for from your post above.

Time to go install the memory. It's been four hours since it was delivered after sitting in a UPS truck all day at -15C (5F). Should be warmed up now. Smiley

Thanks again, Nick.

New rig is running. And it ran from first power on. That's a first for me. Usually I've made a mistake somewhere. Anyway, I've hijacked this thread enough.

I find that amusing since the Vendetta 2's come with the fans that have a 4 pin connector and they are saying that they are rare Tongue.
