Moving pictures were available at the time.

Was it just cost prohibitive to set up a camera and film a multitude of attempts?

No, that's a later clip. Note that the pilot is seated, not prone... and they used some sort of dollies under the wings instead of a track in the center. No idea, though, what year that was or where it happened.

I've heard they just wanted one or two good pics of the first successful flight, but definitely did not have a lot of money for full photo-documantation. They didn't invite the press because if they failed, they wanted to be able to just go back to the drawing board without being branded as failures in te public eye. There also was not a whole lot of public interest in thir project at the time... in fact, many did not believe they'd done it until well aftr the fact.

Indeed, did a project on aviation history a few weeks back, the first in-flight footage wasn't captured until a few years later Smiley
