I got my computer back from the shop, and they're sure that the video card is bad. So now, I need to get a new one.

What would I need to get to have the same, or more performance then my old Geforce 8800 Ultra 768MB 16X PCI Express Video Card?

I was looking at some numbers, and the 9800 GTX seems slower. Would I need to get a GeForce GTX 260 or better?

actually.. the 280 would be needed to equal (and slightly better) the 8800GTX Ultra at the very least

Its the same card.. just the 285 is a die shrink

you must have a 6 and 8 pin PSU connector..  usually the card comes with an adapter but you must make sure the PCIe plugs those adapters plug into are on separate rails to ensure 100% power to the card

Single rail PSU's like what I suggest (PC Power & Cooling) dont need to worry about that

PSU will need to be good to run one of those as they do suck a bit more power than the 8800

I have an 850 Watt Power Supply Unit, and there are two 6 pin connectors plugged into the 8800. There is an 8 pin connector, but I can't tell what it's for.

As for seperate rails, i'm not really sure what you mean by that

The 8 pin is either the plug you seek or its designed for the 8 pin Quad processor power on the motherboard

The new video cards have a 6pin and a 8pin PCIe power output. The 8pin plug off the PSU for the quad CPU power input will not work in its place..  

I cant tell what you have there for sure without seeing the unit and its wiring diagram

2 different rails means the 6pin and the 8pin plugs would pull power from 2 different voltage regulators in the PSU to ensure they each get all the power they need. Most PSU's that have a 6 and 8pin plug off the PSU for the video card are designed like that but some older units that do not have the 8pin plug must use an adapter in which the user must make sure they pull power for the adapter from the right lines or they can underpower the card without realizing it.

On further investigation, the two 6 pin connectors that are plugged into the video card are really two adapters that are plugged into 8 pin connectors that run from the PSU

If you post the PSU make and model number I can try and look it up to see if there is a layout diagram

More than likely the PSU has the plugs you need from the description thus far. PCIe is 6pin however if the PSU is designed for SLi or Crossfire it would most likely have at minimum 2 6pin and 2 8pin PCIe power plugs

OK that PSU 8pin is NOT for the graphics card!

That is the quad CPU motherboard power plug only


Motherboard Connectors    
24-pin Main Connector
8-pin Power Connector <----- this is for the 8pin plug on the motherboard
4-pin Power Connector



you only have 1 8pin connector on that PSU and it is not designed for the video card in any way, shape or form

It has four 6-pin PCI-E connector for Multi-GPU Graphic Cards (which is a doubles jack off each rail)  but only has 2 RED PCIe connections at the PSU, meaning it has 2 PCIe rails. That would mean you would use both 6pin leads, one off each red port but with 1 you need to use an adapter that would use the 2nd 6pin + another lead to make a 8pin conversion

If the converter jack is something I have never seen before and it is some kind of aftermarket cable which takes into account proper pinnout it may work

but to be quite honest that makes absolutely no sense at all

The 2 red ports on the PSU are for the PCIe power to the graphics card and they should be what was attached to the 8800 Ultra, nothing else

I did some searching, and actually found the box for the PSU, which was buried away in storage.

On the box it says, "Supports two 8-pin PCI-E and two 6-pin PCI-E connectors for next generation video cards."

OK then this is a different PSU than what I looked up

I checked the Thermaltake TP  850 .. apparently this is a different version/model of it

OK.. THATS GOOD!

so you are set to go.. just make sure to follow the the right pinnout.. 1 6pin from 1 PCIe main and 1 8pin from the other
