64bit OS PREP
Everything will look exactly the same as 32bit EXCEPT you will have 2 PROGRAM FILES folders.
C:\Program Files
C:\Program Files (x86)
All “true’ 64bit programs will install into C:\Program Files all 32bit programs to be emulated by the 64bit OS (which is most of them) will install to C:\Program Files (x86)
Some older 32 bit software may attempt to install into C:\Program Files and you will need to watch where software tries to install when it comes to older programs
NO 16 bit program will run in x64. Any 32bit program will.
For any motherboard support software only available at Asus for the board such as sound and LAN drivers make SURE you enter the support area, find the correct board and answer the pop-up that appears you are on WindowsXP x64. The selections should only be for x64 drivers
Go directly to Intel for the motherboard Chipset drivers as they will be the latest and most likely much newer than the ones posted at Asus.
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldId=16023&lang=engYou can expect much smoother results in all running applications and no issues with clocking. Should be exactly the same with perhaps better stability with >2GB
No cache edits are needed for >2GB
Make sure to go to Windows Update, Over and Over and Over again until you see there are no updates available in revisiting. You must reboot and return to WU for that to work correctly.
Everything will look exactly the same as XP x32 other than the Program Files folder but DO be aware there is a 32 and 64bit Internet Explorer7 in which the 64bit version is high security and will not allow ActiveX and addons like flash to work. If your email client such as outlook or outlook express pulls up the wrong version of IE there will be limited content it can run. The default for the OS is the 32bit version but the 64bit version can be launched by Office support programs.
You can tell which one you are on in the IE7 HELP-ABOUT area. It will say 64bit Edition in the VERSION area
The only setting in the BIOS you may need to change is under the ADVANCED CHIPSET feature. If there is an option called MEMORY REMAP FEATURE - set it to ENABLED for a 64bit OS
All tweaking is exactly the same HOWEVER you MUST make sure you get the 64bit versions of O&O Defrag as well as any other low level system maintenance software.
That can get a bit tricky so anything that has to do with defrags and other software of that nature must be 64bit
