I recently had a Trojan virus sneak through my system in an .exe file and completely disabled my IE7 and desktop search functions.

After using the web browser feature in Google earth to download and install Firefox,
I have learned about the virus and what it did to my system.

But since my file search system is also disabled, I haven't been able to locate all of the files that it placed in my system so that I can just delete them manually.

This is the first time something has slipped by both AVG and Spybot.

I always scan downloads with both before and after the download process, so I thought this one was safe also,
so it  really took me by surprise when I clicked on the .exe and AVG popped up with a Trojan alert.

My question is: Is there a way to only uninstall and reinstall these features without touching anything else?

I tried doing it from my XPpro SP2 discs, but I have since installed SP3 (in order to run GTA4), and the repair will not go through.

I have way too many music studio programs with hard earned presets and setups to even think about doing a fresh install of XP,
and since firefox is working, if what I am after is not possible, I guess I can live with it.

I tried contacting Microsoft, but they told me I had to have their System scan site look at it first,
but it will not work with firefox, I told them that if my IE was working, I wouldn't be contacting them. Cheesy

Thanks for any help. Smiley

Well, I can't say with any certainty whether or not it will work, but here's what I would do. PROCEDE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

First, go here and download (don't install it yet, just download it) Avira. Then, go to Microsoft and download the IE7 setup program. Save them both to a handy place. (Like your desktop)

Second, UNINSTALL AVG. (This is only to prevent complications in further steps.) Reboot your machine.

Third, install and update Avira that you downloaded. This program is great, and it will uninstall cleanly if you decide to return to AVG later. The important thing to remember is to have ONLY ONE anti-virus solution installed on your system at one time!

Fourth, boot your machine in safe mode, and start Avira and run a scan. It may take anywhere from half and hour to several hours to complete, but let it finish. Safe mode is important, because if the virus goes active on normal start-up, Avira might detect the problem, but may tell you  that it's in use, and therefore can't be deleted or quarantined. Safe mode will bypass programs that normally start with your system, and only load what is nessesary to get the machine up and running, thus making deletion of the no-no files easier.

This should remove the offending trojan/virus files. Now you should be able to uninstall IE7 from you control panel's add/remove programs list, and then reinstall it fresh from the setup you downloaded earlier.

Like I said this may or may not work, but it's what I would try.

Best of luck.
