Just scored TWO eVGA 8800GTS Superclocked videocards exactly like what  I already have in my present system and an Audigy2 soundcard for less than 300 bucks, shipped. I want to build a 3-card SLi rig using an intel chip running at 3.0 to 3.3 GHZ minimum. To run FSX at max-max with no hiccups, jerks or lock-ups is the target intent. What should I buy? I looked at the i7, but I ain't shellin' out a grand for it. That's just nuts! And which board? My limit on chips and boards is about $300 for each. Thanks for your  help.

My system: AMD Phenom 9500 cpu, 2 x eVGA e-GeForce 8800GTS Superclocked vidcards (640Mb DDR3 each), Zalman "sunflower" 9700 fan, Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 mobo, 4Gb G.Skill PC2-6400 DDR2 800Mhz RAM, 2 x Sony 20X DVD writers, Thermaltake Toughpower 850W modular p/s, 7 x 120mm fans, Windows XP Home and SP3, 2 x 250Gb Western Digital SATA-300 HDs (1 for apps, 1 for storage and precious files backup), CoolerMaster CM 690 case, NOD-32. Won't run FSX. Locks up a lot with FS9, too.

SLI does NOTHING for FSX... literally NOTHING

you're gonna have to clock that CPU to past 3.5ghz to get the results you want... use this
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/8444/cpu-tri-57/Thermalright_Ultra-120_eXtreme...

the graphics card... I would think about going for the GTX 260 or the 280...

and the memory... triple channel DDR3... preferably 1600mhz if you're clocking (which you WILL have to do to get the results you want).. you can do it on 1333mhz but it's a bit harder. 6gb+ memory should work well.. which means you'll also need  a 64bit OS...

nope. it's not cheap. but if you want to get those results you're looking for then you have to bust this out of your wallet

Actually doing NOTHING is a lie. It does very little. I think it can support higher AA at very high resolutions.

you are right actually. although I was talking about performance.. it doesn't do anything there from what I know. Unless you have a monitor that can run 1920x1200 or higher, then I wouldn't spend my money on SLI just for FSX.. but if you play other games.. it'll help on any resolution  Wink
