I don't think the Air Force would permit an aircraft to do that. Too high a risk, especially a tanker plane. What do you guys think?

Cool

I don't know. The guy on the right is tracking it with his camera and the sound very much resembles a low altitude pass. Having been in the Air Force myself, I can tell you sometimes boredom becomes a problem and has to be dealt with by doing something totally insane. Cheesy The one thing I didn't see was a shadow and the perspective really doesn't look correct. It looks as if the aircraft is farther away than it should be.

What do you mean you didn't see a shadow? it was directly in front of the plane the whole time.

I watched again and saw it. Actually it looks to me like the shadow starts in front of the plane, by midway it is directly under the plane, and  toward the end it is behind the plane. It also looks darker than the other shadows.

I'm calling bullcrap, no dust flying up from the air displacement or the thrust of the engines...well done, very realistic, but it's gotta be fake.

Oh yeah?  I see they were on there after you mentioned it, but I got that from my own observations.  Am I wrong?

Maybe the video was taken on a cell phone, in which case you would not see everything clearly, it just looks real to me. More real than the airplane losing a wing and landing did. I could be wrong.  Cheesy

I've seen it done plenty of times in my career in the field...it's a common everyday thing for the military, making supply drops and such...so yeah it could happen, but there is much more dust and dirt flying.

Shane makes a good point though, it could be a low low quality camera, but still for a 4 engine jet to breeze the ground like that, I would think that even a crappy camera would catch the cloud of dust kicked up behind it.

But there is no dust from them either is the point. And the airbus didn't even rock the small planes as it blasted by.

The airbus one is most certainly real....It was in most of the national papers....

To be fair the KC135 is in a desert, so some dust would be expected......the real question is who really cares?? Tongue

I think that the KC135 would kick up dust because it's in a desert where all the little particulates would be settled, just waiting for something to come and blow them around.  Likewise the TAP one wouldn't because it's at an airport where this sort of thing is allways going on, so the sand or whatever, probally would have blown away oir is too small for the camera to pick-up from all the constant use it has gone through.  As for why the plane did not rock.. The plane was simply too far away for it to feel its effects.  The same reason why people don't blow into the ocean when planes take off there.

maybe its because they are flying over a runway and dirt held down by a nice thick layer of green grass Huh

It sounds way too quiet to me. Military aircraft are usually a lot louder than civilian. I know copper choppers and the hospital choppers sneak up on me, while I can hear military choppers from 2 miles away.

I'm definitely calling this one real.

Just because you don't see the dust coming up doesn't mean it's not there, and here are my reasons.

1.  In that situation, I would imagine the pilot would be coming out of a dive in the last few seconds (unless he flew all the way across the desert NOE), and he probably kept the speed back a bit just because you don't want to be screaming across the desert floor as fast as you can and have to make a high-G pull-up in a KC-135 if you see something coming.  For these two reasons, I would imagine he would have the engines throttled back probably close to idle.  At idle, the engines would kick up dust, but not nearly as much as at higher power settings.  Also, the exhaust plume wouldn't be large enough to reach the ground for some time if it ever did, since it's probably much hotter than the surrounding air, it will rise before it can ever hit the ground to create a dust cloud.  Engines at idle also solves the sound problem somewhat.

2.  As far as dust from the wingtip vorticies, they usually take a rather long time to descend, which is why you might sometimes get a "caution, wake turbulence" on your landing clearance, even minutes after the aircraft in-front of you has landed.

3.  This isn't the USAF, this is the French, and we all know they're friggin crazy anyway.

My 2 cents. Wink

They're flying over runways, not fine desert sand.  I have sat next to runways in Hawaii while C-17's did touch and goes and didn't feel even the slightest breeze, but I have also boarded and gotten off of C-17's via rear cargo ramp while the engines were running and the jetblast was very intense (and friggin hot!!)  The two you posted were real obviously, I'm still calling Bull on the KC135.

One time we were sitting on the hotpad waiting for a C-141 to park. He overshot the stop mark a bit and as we were just about to get out of our truck when Mr. pilot decided he had to be exactly on the mark and he proceeds to engage the thrust reversers and trottle up. We're sitting in this Dodge 1-ton pickup and it's rocking and feeling like it's gonna blow over, all the while that's going on there's also all this of debris bouncing bouncing off it. And the noise? WOW! Shocked  Didn't know a plane that large could back up until that day. Grin

The C-17's winglets are designed to minimize wingtip vortices, so thats why you probablly didn't feel much.  However the KC-135 would produce significantly more wake turbulence, even though in the video it is going fast in a clean configuration.  I am also calling BS on the -135 video.  That plane should look WAY bigger than it actually does, no matter what kind of camera is being used.  Look at the TAP A310 video, that plane looks big.

Interesting to hear people's thoughts though.

Obviously fake, nicely done though...um...History Channel?
On the KC-135 vid there are simply to many discrepancies (not enough dust, the moving shadow, size for distance, no movement of the underbrush). I'm still calling it fake.
