Does Active Sky X need to be working for this ASA upgrade to work? I reinstalled it but it gives me an error: "Simconnect SP1 managed version was not found."

No it doesn't need to be running. As far as the SimConnect error - have you asked here -
http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showforum=171
Simconnect can be picky about permissions, etc. The guys at HiFiSim should be able to get you squared away.
Enjoy!

Thanx Nick - coming from you that is high praise indeed. It's obvious that a lot of careful work went into this release.
Merry Christmas!

What are the procedures when running ActiveSky with FSX?
Do you absolutely have to have Net.framework to able to run ActiveSky with FSX?

Yes .Net is required.

Is this version better than Active Sky X.
I had to disable X just to fly a sailplane.
The tow Plane would fly fine and with Active Sky X
the sailplane gets tossed so bad there is no way
to control plane behind the towplane.

Thermals seem to be generated independently of CumulusX. On my very first flights with ASA I have only met a view downdrafts - so I can't really tell the quality of the lift generation yet.
As for the airtow, it seems to help a little to tick "enable wind data smoothing" in the settings (ASX and ASA). But it is still a rough ride.

I finally just un-installed it, Unless ASA is a lot better than ASX.
Last Night I tried again, fair weather little to no wind, on tow I
was thrown around so bad every time the tow line broke.
I run a P5K3 liquid cooled 8gigs of Ram and a GeForce 8800 GTS
with 750meg all setting are on Ultra High, has always run great.
friend let me try ASX to see if I want to buy it I think if ASA
is similar to ASX I'll stick to CumulusX and Sim-Probe.
When I was towed in my uncles 808 I have never experienced
that kind of turbulence.
Probably works just fine with everything else though, I just fly
sailplanes mostly.

How is the lift model with CumulusX. Is it the same as the standard FSX lift only located in the right places or are the thermals and ridgelift better. (I mostly use Condor for flying sailplanes and not FSX).

Much better Check Here
http://www.luerkens.homepage.t-online.de/peter/
for more info.
Download both CumulusX and Sim-Probe Free
Data for Sim-Probe Here
http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/SELECTION/inputCoord.asp
Use Settings >> JRC (IT), Multiple Selection, ArcInfo ASCII
Download selection unzip and import into Slope Database tool.
Some say you do not need these data files with FSX but I notice
better results with them.

Just for clarification:
Sim_probe scans the terrain and tells CumulusX! how much slope lift should be produced. So basically, a slope data base is not needed. In addition, sim_probe contains a simple IGC logger.
The Slope_Data_Base tool generates a database of slope information, that canbe used instead of sim_probe. The lift creation process is slightly different. In addition, with an existing and activated slope data base, thermal locations in mountains depend on wind and sun irradation. Even if sim_probe is decativated in CumulusX! it would continue working as logger.
So, if you activate both, slope lift is produced by sim_probe, but thermal locations are depending on the slope data base info.
Cheers,
Peter
