Here are some fractals done in apophysis. Its a neat program, but very confusing to understand.

There were many Fractal programs available for the 8-Bit computers in the past...Sinclair Spectrum/Timex, Commodore 64, etc...

I got all my scripts and tutorials from here. Just click on what your looking for on the left side.
