Has anyone made the mistake of purchasing and trying to install and run GTA IV on their PC yet?

After 3 maddening hours of frustration, downloads, updates, reboots, patches, and bugs, I still have yet to get this infuriating thing to play on my computer!! Angry Angry

Should have bought the Xbox version. Cry

You are much more patient than I am.  I would have tossed it after an hour  Grin

I have the game for PS3, I would lose my mind trying to figure everything out at the PC level...

Well, I finally got it to run, and it looks good, but the patch that they released for it kills all controller support so it's keyboard and mouse only, which is a BIG no no for me, got to have a controller for this, looks like I'll have to shelf it until patch number 2 comes out. Sad

Thank heaven for MSFS! Grin

HA HA!!! At last, I found a download that solves the controller problem!!!!!! Grin Grin Grin

If you guys think FSX is a resource hog, you should give this game a try! Wink  I've been on forums where people with overclocked i7 systems with 4870's are complaining about single digit fps! Shocked

I keep the settings low, and it doesn't look that bad, still runs on the verge of being a slide show on my setup though. Oh well, live and learn. Wink

I installed without any hassles.

Still see some graphics glitches and yeah, imagine driving like a pro using W;A;S;D and Mouse  Grin

I'm more coordinated with the keyboard and mouse. I can play the same game on the PC and a console system, and i'm horrible with the controller compared to the keyboard/mouse.

With the keyboard/mouse, i'm quicker, I can react faster, and my aim is better.

I got mad respect for anyone able to play a game using the keyboard and mouse, I guess after years of playing console games, it's just a habit I can't break.

This is my first PC game that's not a flight sim, I just wasn't prepared for all the signup stuff that it required. I also forgot to have SP3 installed which is where I ran into more problems. Then It mandatoraly self installed the patch through WLG and that caused my controller problem. Thankfully some talented gamers out there wern't willing to wait on R* for patch 2 to fix patch 1. From the info given at the site, patch one only allows for xbox style controllers to be recognized, so he made an emulator for it, now my logitech pad works perfectly.
From what I understand of all the signup junk, it is mainly just for the online play, but I have no intentions of ever doing that, I just wanted to do the story line, the GTA series has always been my favorite, and now that I have the controller issue figured out, it's turning out to be quite enjoyable indeed. keyboard and mouse are 1000x better than a joystick. complete and utter control over your movements. not going to a persons head and then the joystick still moving to the right when you let go because it still has a way to travel. play some counter strike Tongue.

when I play shooters on pc its always the "wasd" keyboard and the mouse look, I do much better that way.

I recently bought a xbox 360 and still suck at the "rs" look in the shooters

i'm playing it on the PC... had some trouble installing as well... but putting the GTAIV.exe file to run in win2000 compatibility mode solved all crashes and problems

also i had to turn down sound acceleration to basic, since all i could hear was a loud hiss with it turned all the way up... but now it's working fine

i tried using my gamepad with it (which is based on the PS2 format) but i had problems with the view axes... (and gamepad buttons apparently can't be mapped in this game... go figure  Tongue )

but i'm used to playing GTA on the keyboard and mouse... mostly because i own neither Xbox or PS3  Roll Eyes but i like aiming with the mouse and i'm probably more coordinated driving on the keyboard anyways... although it would be fun if the gamepad would work properly

besides these problems, the game is awesome in every respect... i am completely awed by it... i figure that's the kind of game a 100 million dollar budget will get you!! thumbs up to R*

now i just need a better pc to run it with better graphics and with the triple head turned on  Wink

Cheers
