Not quite sure what they have done, but basically i they have removed all the turnoff options from the start/ctrl-alt-delete screens ... !

I have a suspicion that they used regedit.exe as that was the last thing in the run menu ... !

So yeh, basically i think they have changed my user rights so i can't switch off ... how do i get it back?? Help pleeeeeease  Cheesy

Using Vista 32 bit also if it helps. Thankyou  Smiley

Did they remove the options on the Start Button?

Click start, bottom right there is a brown sleep button, and a lock button. Right next to that is an arrow button with other options. Shutdown should be there.

If not, go to Control Panel to change the sleep button to a shutdown.

Open the Control Panel and click on Power Options. Select the Power Plan that you have selected and click on the blue “Change plan settings” beneath it.  On the next screen you see click on the blue "Change advanced power settings". Scroll down to “Power buttons and lid” and click the plus sign. Click the plus sign for "Start Menu Power Button.

This should give you a drop down to change the default button from sleep to shutdown.

Thankyou Al_fallujah, but I tried and it didn't work Sad I think I explained the problem slightly wrongly, see screenshot below. I think he edited the system registry or something and removed the options...something to do with user rights possibly?? regedit.exe

Are you part of a larger network?
Do you have Vista SP1?

It sounds like they are using a switch in the Group Policy editor to prevent you from shutting down. Group Policy has an option to "Remove and prevent access to the Shut Down, Restart, Sleep and Hiberate Commands".

SP1 removed the Group Policy editor, but it can be re-installed/re-activated.  Google it a bit. I don't have time to look today, sry.

Go to start>run, and type GPEdit.msc and see if anything opens.
The control for it may or may not be installed. I am not at all familiar with the tool, so if it opens, explore at your own risk.
