And in this country that memory is $A450 a pair cost price .... and it is only sold in pairs!

I've also got the good news that I can also install as my D drive for FSX the new Western Digital 300gig 10,000 RPM VelociRaptor.

Don't tempt me I might just do that.  However even at Australian componrnt prices it would probably exceed the value of my computer.  On the other hand if you ever visited this country we could arrange a tuning scedule that would have you see the entire continent.

However I have completely mislead you on the memory,  It is OCZ DDR3 12800 memory at 1600 clock speed.  Surely with a third stick this should go well?

that and the VRaptor? ahhhhh   now your cookin with gas!

OK then all you need to do is learn just a little bit about the BIOS and raise BCLOCK a bit to give you a nice boost.

On the right heatsink the 940 will do over 4GHz however you do not have to clock that high and can boost CPU speed very easy on the Intel provided heatink... probably limited to about 3.4-3.5Ghz but worth the clock since you are getting

The memory multiplier in the BIOS is based on BCLOCK. With a small boost you probably will not need to change it and do remember, having 1600 memory is not about running it at 1600 or over its about having the headroom to clock stable on good timing

Here is information about clocking i7 and below that a link to a very simplified video of how its done.

The first post in this thread may seem a bit heavy but it will get you orientated to the clocking process with i7 and it includes information about the 920, 940 and 965.

You do need a decent 750watt PSU for i7 and that 280.

Is it one of those islands where the planes land almost on the beach?  Parting the hair of the watchers!

I am going to guess Hawaii.  It’s "close" to the northern tropic line and about 2500-2700 miles from Vegas, plus it has golf courses and lots of sunshine.

Of course the Bahamas are right at 2500 miles from Vegas as well. Plenty of sunshine, but don't know about golf courses.

This is like the game "Where in the world is Carmon San Diego"

On second thought I think Hawaii is actually below the Tropic of Cancer. So I am going with the Bahamas.

I don’t go to Hawaii unless I am in need a cure for that ancient Polynesian disease, Lakanookie

you overshot by about 75 miles... I'm in the Mouth of the Rat

Nick, if you're that close to me (10 minute drive)  maybe I'll drive my new system to you so you can tweak it... I'll pay if needed!

Of course.. I have to confirm that you are in Boca Raton, FL  Grin

But I'm serious about driving to you so you can tweak it and me paying you lol  Grin

Sorry..  I dont make or take housecalls

you need to learn how to clock and set up on your own.. which is better than having it done for you since that way you learn.   Smiley

Understood and agreed Nick! I'll do as much research as I can before I even touch that new processor out of the box!

I haven't got the full details yet, but OCZ is now putting high end RAM out in packets of three for the i7 chips.  Allegedly they are especially tuned for the i7 behaviour.

Nick:  I have seen previous discussions, but my tech has a 4870x2 vidcard as well as the 280.  The 4870x2 is marginally cheaper, but that is not significant,  I am of course painfully aware that MSFS has minimal hyperthreading and does not support SLI (so the x2 is limited).

Is the difference in the performance of these two cards sufficient to insist on the 280?

I know that if there is only a 10% difference that is a big difference in MSFS.

4870 suffers in heavy weather.. yes there is a big difference

if you play Crysis buy the x2 4870. FSX ... the 280

ATi cards are shader engine.. Nvidia cards are horsepower

FSX is a year 2000 shit rendering engine which requires horsepower not shaders
