the Vickers VC-10

from wikipedia:-

"The Vickers VC10 is a British airliner designed and built by Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft) Ltd and first flown in 1962. The airliner was designed to operate on long distance routes with a high subsonic speed and also be capable of hot and high operations from African airports. Today, a handful of these aircraft remain in service as aerial refuelling and transport aircraft with the RAF."

The VC-10. What an aircraft. Propably the most beautiful of those 50's/60's jets, and loved by both passengers and crew. Seemingly ruined by the very airline that drew up its specification - BOAC!  Its 4 RR conways didnt help either, it was stuck with them for life as better, quieter and more effecient engines came on the scene. Its a testament to the orginal design that its still flying for the RAF 46 years after its first flight, abliet in dwindling numbers. Theres nothing quite like it sound wise when your hear one on final/ taking off from Brize norton!
