I just installed a new Radeon EAH4850. I was thoroughly fed up with nVidia and after an evening cleaning out the older drivers I set to work installing my new card.
Problem is although I've downloaded the very latest XP drivers for this card, every time I run FSX Acceleration I get the message
"The drivers currently installed for your video card may cause your computer to stop responding when Flight Simulator is running"
It's got me scratching my head - anyone have any ideas?
AMD AM2 X2 dual core 4200+
Asrock SATA2-Glan mobo
4gb DDR2 memory
Radeon EAH4850 512mb card
Realtek mobo sound
Creative Labs sound
Windows XP latest SPs
FSX Acceleration
Cheers for any pointers,
Ian

Did you try installing the recommended Drivers which came on the CD with the Card?

Hi F - yeah that was the first thing I did but Windows would only boot to a black screen. I can only get past that by going to thte ATI website and installing the latest drivers from there.

So the Drivers and the new Video Card don't work even when you are NOT using the (FSX) Flight Sim?...(Boot-up)...

Yep, I figured the installer threw the wrong drivers onto my sytstem.
The card works fine in every way with the ATI drivers until I run FSX, then it says "Uh, no, sorry..."

...serves you right for abandoning lovely-old FS 2004 in favour of FSX..

FSX runs fine... the problem
is you or your system

This is strange
I know the card is FSX compliant if the drivers are correct
I am thinking you 'may' have a corrupt windows install or corrupt DirectX install or both, or some old onboard graphics chips has the system locked from using the new card. Does the board have any kind of onboard graphics card that has not been properly disabled in the BIOS?
Have you tried to update DirectX?
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a...
Run the web installer follow the directions and let it update directX as needed
Another thing you can check is to see if the DirectX diagnostics are working.. after updating DirectX click START - RUN - and type dxdiag and then click OK
Click the DISPLAY tab and CONFIRM the 3 selections under the DIRECTX FEATURES section are all ENABLED. If so, run the direct draw and Direct 3D tests
If you find one NOT enabled.. enable it
If you find one greyed out you have a problem with Windows or the hardware/drivers
The correct drivers for the card are here:
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/radeonx-xp
Other possibilites... motherboard drivers are not properly installed, BIOS settings not correct, incorrect graphics adapter or monitor listed in the GRAPHICS properties in Windows

Just to complete the thread, it all seems to be wokring fine now.
All you need to do is reformat your hard drive, reinstall everything and get the drivers in a early as possible.
Sigh.

I thought perhaps you may have had a corrupt Windows install
sorry you had to go through that but look on the bright side... clean installs that are set up right always net better results
