The BIOS has a SATA config option for IDE/RAID/AHCI.  If I understand correctly Intel recommends RAID even if you're not using an array because it loads the AHCI driver also.

I have no need for RAID but on my WD Raptors, considering FSX, will I get any performance benefit from installing AHCI as opposed to leaving it at IDE mode? I've read some benchmarks that indicate no big deal in my situation. And I don't really want to go through another XP repair install if I can avoid it!

FWIW - I have 6 SATA drives:

74G Raptor XP boot
74G Raptor (may be Vista boot - currently empty)
150G Raptor - FSX
320G Seagate - Programs
500G Maxtor - Backup
DVD Burner

Any thoughts Nick?

FSX runs fine... the problem
is you or your system

Nope

No benefit

The higher functions actually make Raptors run slower. The AHCI system which includes NCQ which I DISABLE on my professional RAID cards because of how much perf it sucks from a hard drive

NCQ and AHCI is made for NETWORK computers.. not game systems where raw speed of the drive is needed

Straight and to the point - that's what I like best about your answers, Nick.

There are some folks who, when asked what time it is, will proceed to tell you how the watch works. Altho you *could*, you don't when unnecessary.

You just saved me a bunch of time! Smiley

Thanx!
