This subject crops up from time to time. I'm always surprised to see other people's ideas. It all depends on your definition of ugliness I suppose. I've seen a lot of aircraft of all shapes & sizes over the years but can't say I would call any of them ugly. Interesting or unusual might be better descriptions. There is usually a very good reason for the way they look. Something that appears ugly at first sight will often become attractive or even beautiful the more you see of it. I thought the Boeing 747 looked very odd the first time I saw one.
Here's one example of an aircraft only a mother or designer could love. The Farman F-4X Jabiru. This is the only photo I've ever seen of it. I can only suppose that there is an open cockpit on top of the fuselage.
http://www.simviation.com/yabbuploads/113684.jpg
The Jabiru could carry 6 passengers. Four examples were built & actually entered service in 1925.

A rather odd list of choices there...
There are some aircraft that just make my heart beat faster, but I don't mind boxy, bulgy, slow-looking, etc... as a pilot, the only way an airplane will make me cringe is if it looks like it would not fly well.
That Caproni looks like- and was- a disaster waiting to happen. It doesn't even get points in my book for sheer audacity- it's horrible.
Pretty nifty7 houseboat, though...
But that Farman definitely lacks harmony, I guess... probably looks better with a pilot's head sticking out the top- helmet and goggles, and a greasy scarf...

I think the ugliest aircraft would probably be the Junkes G38. There is an observation compartment in the wings and only 2 were ever built.

Unusual perhaps but ugly? - I don't think so. One of these giants was a regular visitor to Croydon Airport before WWII.

If I say the VC-10 is ugly, will I get the chance to take a photo of some Tornados releasing ordnance?
I dislike the F-35. MiG-15/17/19s are also awful. Although, I think the MD-80 has to top the cake for ugly aircraft.

Once you've heard a VC10 and seen its graceful lines in person you won't think that

Of course I would never say the VC-10 is ugly - the curvature and sweep of the wings, those beautiful Conways and its nose section place it high on the list of beautiful aircraft.

I saw a video of that thing crash. It was actually a very dumb idea to use helicopters with the tail rotor removed and the fuse shortened.
Did they really expect that thing to fly?

Uh - when you have four rotors, you don't need a tail-rotor. The same can be said for two rotors.

Make that 9 sir. Its short and stubby looking. Im not much of an Airbus fan to begin with, but the A340 is pretty nice.

For the worst Airbus besides the Beluga, I would say the A350. I just don't think it's very pretty.
http://www.indianairlinesblog.com/wp-content/uploads/airbus-a350-xwb.jpg
For the ugliest Boeing.. seriously, this is kinda weird.. even though i'm a thorough Airbus fan, I can't think of any Boeing I don't like the looks of.. even though the B747 looks like it has brain tumor, it still has some weird "monstrous beauty".. same about the A380, in my opinion.
But that may be my Bus Madness.

The "Wobbly Goblin" is unstable, but so are many other airplanes. They use flight computers to actually stay in the sky. But I doubt that any of this is relevant - what is relevant, is that an open mind with regards to 'aesthetics' or 'concepts' will not build an airplane properly.
I doubt the engineers at Boeing or Airbus sit around thinking, "Will this look nice?" Nor do they further a concept because it seems 'cool' like the monstrosity shown above. Airplanes are made to fly, not look nice (though you do get good looking planes).

You doubt it's relevancy, yet you explained the relevancy before you made that statement.
Due to its design and appearance, the F-117 would not fly without those computers.
Therefore, some 'open minded' designers ignored physics, and built it according to how they wanted it to look to optimize its stealth features.

That reminds me of the German Flying Fortress from all the Alternative WWII stuff. Think if that had brand new C-130J motors? bad ass-ness.
But the A380 is to short and is as ugly as the 747SP, but the Baluga, and Gupy are ugly as sin.

Classic aeroplane. Yak-3 with a jet. Awesome. And they left the undercarriage in the right place too!
The Yak 23 on the other hand, is the ugly sister.

Not sure if this counts because it "flew" in ground effect, but the Beriev Bartini VVA 14 looks like it hit every branch as it crashed down through the ugly tree

Transavia Airtruck

they are both truly ugly!!!

Taking a big risk saying something like that around here.
I'm a big fan of the Grumman Tracker. Although I'll admit the silly KLM livery doesn't do it justice.

That particular aircraft has now taken over from my Beech Baron 58 in the popularity stakes, in my Hangar.
An exceedingly speedy aircraft, for its bulk and size!
My model has a very nice 2D panel installed!
I'm very pleased with its STOL performance!

I still cant believe that the A380 is on top of the ugliest aircraft. I find it just beautiful. I even bought a 100 page book of just pictures of the plane. I dont see how its ugly.
Haters.

edit; You'll note that the "centerline" isn't what it seems if you look at the nose. I suppose the designer was listing to port when he drew it.

That is horrible.
Agreed! That Jabiru thing is probably the most ugly collection of bolts and metal seen anywhere since the AMC Matador hit the streets...
