Has anyone been keeping an eye on the ACO spec series's? All I can say is that I've never been more excited about auto racing since I first became interested 7years ago. Heres why:
-First hybrids coming out
-Unified GT series in 2010 (corvette vs porche vs ferrari!)
-ALMS "Green Challenge" at Petit and the '09 season
-Growing LMP1 class with Acura
-Incredible LMP2 class in the states
If I were an auto manufacture looking for research into alternative power sources for cars, I would be going crazy! This has potential to be a much better proving ground than any other series out there. Best part is that the racing is real, not the product of cheap rule changes. LeMans this year was awsome, so was the previous 2 Sebring races, and plenty of the other tracks here in the states!

I watch when I remember they're on. It's one of the few series I care to watch any more because of the variety.
In contrast, to me the Rolex series is a joke.

Yeah, I knew that. And it was their stupid idea to have a spec class and call it Daytona Protoype. It was halfway through the debut of the series at the Daytona 24 Hours I changed channels and vowed never to watch the Rolex series ever again. Judging by the frequency that they crash I think it must be a training class for future stunt drivers/crash test dummies. BTW, I think those are the most butt-ugly cars in the world.

this is true. The series even spawned Milk and doughnuts, the plague of the IndyCar series

Milk and doughnuts? Your kidding!
Milk and cookies would be more fitting judging by the way some of the competition behaves.

"Le Mans"/Sports car racing has always been far more beneficial to motoring than the formula types, certainly in the early 90s. Now with Audi and Peugeot doing so well with diesels, people are less afraid to try new technologies without be scared of being completely uncompetitive. What would be nice is if we could have another two or three big manufacturers develop LMP1/competitive LMP2 (as Porsche have) to make it a bit more of a competition, rather than just an Audi/Peugeot shootout (thinking back to the group C days, with Jaguar, Mercedes. many Porsches, Nissan, Toyota, Mazda etc)

Oh yes that was a great time. I also remeber the IMSA/Camel GT series in the 1980s. I can still remember when Jaguar debuted the GTP XJR-9. What a strange looking car, I thought.
I really do miss that series, especially when they had names the likes of Hobbs and Bell to name only a couple.
I have models of the Taka-Q Toyota 88C & C-V and a Protar metal kit of the Rothmans/Porsche 956. Those cars from that era were just pure sexy.

God no! What's worse is in the 60's Chaparral design some nice looking cars. The a ambitious aerodynamicist came along and came up with monstousities like that. Apart from the wheels, I can only see one curve!
For our Stateside friends, they may be more familiar with the Jaguar XJR-9 and 12 thus, with Castrol oil as the title sponsor, or later in Bud Light colours:

so no one is a fan of the Sauber Mercedes C9? I think it looks better than the Jag, and even set the Le Mans speed trap record at 253mph, I believe

It's nice looking enough, but maybe a little bit generic in the body design?
But it's all about what's under the bonnet, right?

The sauber C9 is a favorite of mine, but being british, i love the Jags.
Awesome cars - if you look on youtube theres several films with Jackie Stewart 'testing' various cars, williams, benettons, that sort of thing - and one of them is this jag, and he stuffs it at silverstone then trys to tell us why....its really quite funny

For a Brit that would be heresy!
Never liked the Sauber C9 as a kid (particularly as I did Le Mans in 1989!), although the 1988 AEG sponsored colour scheme was fairly cool.
I was never a fan of Porsche 962s either, but now I find them very nice indeed. Well engineered!
As for the record, apparently a C9 did 248mph in 1989 qualifying, however (and I didn't know this at all) before Peugeot did a works entry (run by that Todt bloke), there was a minnow team called W.M Peugeot (who designed "very French" looking cars - think 70/80s French styling!). It seems in 1988 they taped over every opening during the race to set 251mph! Then (unsurprisingly) the engine blew!
It's so ugly, a google search brings up only one pic!

Use the search term WM P88 Peugeot
BTW, it looks like it was inspired by a bug....or an LSD trip.
Now here's a simply Gorgeous Peugeot:

I thought I had! I obviously didn't!
As I say, French styling has always been a bit hit and miss. Some are classic, some look, at best, odd.

Nice, but was never a fan of the batmobilesque rear wings of the 70s and early 80s Le Mans cars!
