I wasn’t aware that satellite imagery was possible with FSX. Then I came across TileProxy, described as a realtime interface between Microsoft Flight Simulator X / 2004 (Century of Flight) and Internet based satellite map servers. TileProxy downloads satellite terrain at up to 30cm/pixel as you fly. You do require a high end PC and a fast Internet connection. Also it works best with slower aircraft (up to 150 knots). I have tested it with my system in a slow twin and it seems to work anywhere in the world.

I have included two photos of the East end of the Los Angeles International Airport. One is flying with FSX terrain and the other is with TileProxy’s satellite terrain. You will see quite a difference between the two and you become aware what is actually around an airport. Note the elevated roadways, buildings with parked cars, and parking lot off the end of the runways.

For more information about this beta software, you can go to “SourceForge.net: The TileProxy Project”. This software, for me, has added a new realism to FSX.

...

...

Anyway thought this would be of interest to most and maybe this is something we can look forward to with FS11.

Tile proxy will display insane resolution textures if you get the right version and with the Acceleration Mt. St Helens mission which has a 2m mesh in it and set the sim for the right mesh and texture resolution

TP has been around for a while.

Sonic,

Yes, TileProxy (TP) scenery does appear in 3D. But remember the photos are top down so your looking at 100% of the top of a structure and something less or far less on other dimensions of a structure (like sides) hence appearing more flat.

Look at the three screen shots I have included. The first two compare flying into Sky Harbor Int. AP, Phoenix, Arizona, over satellite terrain to flying into Sky Harbor over FSX terrain. Both are in 3D and look great with the main difference being the Sat picture is real where the FSX picture is fictional. The third is flying over a rail station using satellite terrain. Note the multiple trains with rail cars sitting on the tracks.

Phoenix happens to be one of my better areas for TileProxy, as it does not work well in all areas like FSX. Also it requires a top end PC, preferably a Quad Core, with a very fast Internet connection.

TileProxy image of a rail station. Note the various strings of trains with coaches, and boxcars, showing up on the tracks. If this was FSX, the rail station would appear as an empty flat area.

now I remember what it was I dint like not the terrain area but the airports it looked good flying but once I landed the and sitting on the ground it the airport looked like it was painted on the ground. aside from that i really like it. I could actually find my house. Umm I might have to try it agian. I didnt use tileP I used another one you donwload stuff and convert it so Internet was a problem aside from having to dwonload like 800 megs initially but that only converd I guessing 100 miles or so.

I downloaded and installed TileProxy and as far as I'm concerned I have followed the directions to a tee but I don't think I have it working properly and I'm not sure why. All the folders show up in the scenery library, they are checked and pointed to the correct folder. I fire up Tile Proxy which remains on screen in a DOS window and says it’s ready for takeoff. During flight I have decreased frames which lead me to believe it is loaded but I'm not getting any results. Things such as golf courses are obvious dead giveaways that I still am using non satellite imagery.

In the DOS window it gives me information such as Individual Tile Access 0, 0.0 per second
But preloaded as much as 200000, Hit 0, miss 0, messages 156. If it were working properly shouldn’t I see things such as hits registering some type of number?

I sure could use some direction from anyone who is familiar with this program and might have a suggestion what I might be doing wrong.

Thanks, Doug

Yes you should be seeing hits being registered. Did you load the FSX Proxyuser.ini file for the BETA 7 March 21st release? Outside of this, I would recommend reading the instructions carefully again making sure everything has been checked.

I am running a dual core 3.0 GHz CPU with 4 Gigs of RAM. My video card is an Nvidia 8800 GTX and I access the Internet through a high-speed cable interconnect. My success with TileProxy is limited to slow flying aircraft. I can only fly for a limited period of time with good results in some areas before I have to reset or refresh the flight. There is no night flying support with TileProxy. I might also add that TP software was written to run best with Quad core CPUs.

I get a lot of pleasure in using TileProxy to view the actually terrain, especially in areas where I have flown in the past. However it does not even come close to replacing the multitude of simulated FSX graphics, applications, and thrill of flying FSX over an area like Los Angeles at night.
