Oh yes, one thing I miss. My present car, a BMW 525D, the last time the battery was drained (the aux heating decided to throw one and draw power all the time, not just when it was on) that loverly Tip Tronic gearbox is as good as doorstop without a nicely charged battery

You mean you didn't know you could do that with a manual box?
I've lost count of the number of cars, trucks and buses I've bump started. Only those with a completely flat battery can't be started in this way.
