Hello Chummy, Chum, Chums... Smiley...!

It's happened again...
...all my Mozilla Firefox Bookmarks have disappeared...as always happens... Angry...!

I've located my backups in the usual way...as you do...
Mozilla > Firefox > Profiles > Bookmark Backups >.
and there are 5 of them, numbered 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 (the latest) .HTML files.

The one I want to restore is number 15, the previous one....

So, Chums...

What do I do with number 15 HTML file to get it to list my old Bookmarks again... Wink...!

I've been through this bleedin' rigmarole before in the past, (dont we all?), but its always so bleedin' complicated in Firefox.... Angry...., that I've forgotten how I did it last time!.... Cry...!

What is the procedure, now that I have located the HTML File I wish to restore?.... Roll Eyes...!

A Chocolate Cookie for the first Chum to describe the "simplest", "step by step", "easy-peasy", way of achieving it.... Kiss...!

Paul...Confucius is my middle name...trust me!... Wink...!

...got to keep laughing when all else fails!... Grin...!

Hi Paul. Which version of Firefox is this? I've been using Firefox for a long time now & never had this problem. I recently allowed it to install the latest update & all my Bookmarks are still there as they always have been.

Not me. I can't find a Profiles option on my Firefox menu.

Hello Doug....

I've had this happen a few time before..for some reason.. Roll Eyes...?

Bjorn was familiar with the problem and guided me in the past, to restore them..>>>

C:/ > Documents and Settings > "Me  Kiss" > Applications Data > Mozilla > Firefox > Profiles > Bookmarkbackups....(Where they are stored)...Wink...!

I just need to drag out the one I want and do "something" with it to display my previous Bookmarks...(which don't display now... Angry...!..)

It's an common, annoying occurrence, according to the 'Net... Shocked...!

Hello Doug...

I've read through all of them....

...and mostly gone to sleep half way through...accompanied by the customary headache... Grin...!

Now that I have located the .HTML file I want, according to Bjorn, (bless 'im), I just need to make a named Folder...(or sumfin')...in the Firefox Folder (somewhere), and drop the .HTML file I want into it...

..apparently its quite simple...when you know how.!..LOL... Smiley...!

...simple is nice...I like "simple", it brings joy to my heart!... Kiss...!

Paul.... Grin...!

I had a look in my Firefox folder. The Profiles folder has only one sub-folder in it named o0uf67ro.default.* In the Firefox folder there is a file named profiles.ini. You can open this file in Notepad to see the folder name of the default profile. Mine looks like this.

[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1

[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=Profiles/o0uf67ro.default

I suspect you can either edit the path in profiles.ini to point to the folder containing the profile you wish to use or rename the folder to match the existing one.

*PS. There is an HTML file in this folder named bookmarks.html.

Is this simple enough for you? Wink

1. Replace the current "bookmarks.html" file in the profile folder with a renamed bookmark backup:

         a. Close Firefox
         b. Rename the "bookmarks.html" file in the profile folder to "Xbookmarks.html".
         c. Copy one of the bookmarks backup files to the profile folder and rename it "bookmarks.html".
         d. Restart Firefox

DONE IT.... Smiley...!

Don't ask me how... Roll Eyes...!

I've spent most of the day moving the file I need, from here to there, and back again, without any success after re-opening the Browser...

Each time I opened the Browser it insisted on displaying the few recent replacement bookmarks that I had saved, every time.... Angry...

Only after I DELETED all those latest bookmark entries from my Browser did my original bookmark entries magically appear again!... Shocked...!

So...sorted...until next time all my Bookmarks disappear in a puff of smoke...again... Wink...!

Ta, Doug....thanks for your perseverance*....

Paul.... Smiley...!

* ...did you ever recall what happened to Percy Verance?... Roll Eyes...!

.... Grin....!

Do the AWOL bookmarks by chance happen to disappear after Firefox updates?

Hello Mush...

My memory is not as good as I may wish... Roll Eyes....

But I am sure I upgraded to Firefox 3.0 AFTER I sorted my AWOL Bookmark problem out, and my Bookmarks were all still in place... Smiley...!

The new Firefox 3 layout/organisation takes some getting used to, after being used to Firefox 2, particularly in the "Bookmarks" area!... Shocked...!

Paul...Fighting Fire with Foxes... Cool...!

It's a shame that Firefox lets you easily "Import" Bookmarks from Internet Explorer with the click of a button, but not from Firefox itself... Shocked....!

I would go crackers if I had to go through all that malarkey of searching for the most recent set of Bookmarkers in the C Drive Directory, and have to replace them all again...!

I still cant remember how I did it last time!... Cry...!

What a flippin' rigmarole it is, ....in Firefox!

Paul... Roll Eyes...!

It would be lovely if you just had to select "Import > Bookmarks" in Firefox, and a window popped up displaying the actual folder with all your previous Bookmarks in it, (hidden in the C Drive), and you just click on the set you want....Olay...sorted!!

...to easy...or what?.... Wink... Grin...!

The procedure I posted earlier should be simple enough for anyone. Quote:

        b. Rename the "bookmarks.html" file in the profile folder to "Xbookmarks.html".
        c. Copy one of the bookmarks backup files to the profile folder and rename it "bookmarks.html".

I can't understand why you get all these problems. As I said before, I've been using Firefox for a long time now without losing a single bookmark. I've installed the latest update since my previous reply with no trouble at all.

You can do exactly that. Click Bookmarks > Organise Bookmarks.
Then click File > Import.

At great personal risk I just installed Firefox 3 to check it out. I lost my trusty Google Toolbar* & several other useful plugins in the process but didn't lose a single bookmark. The option you want has changed slightly. Click Bookmarks > Organise Bookmarks. Then click the Import & Backup tab. Select the Import HTML option.

...

You will still have to locate the backup profile you wish to restore. I suggest finding the location now & creating a shortcut to it. The folder is named bookmarkbackups. The files have a "bookmarks" prefix. Shouldn't be difficult to find from the Windows Search function.

*Meanwhile, I'm going back to Firefox 2. Tongue
