Like the RAR file thread, i have no clue what a .torrent file is. I typed in 'Free Flight Sim 2004 Stuff' and one of the responses was a file with .torrent at the end. Can someone shed light on this?

Hi, Nitro.

A 'torrent' is a method of downloading, but at pretty low bitrates and from a number of different client servers. You need to have a torrent program installed to translate the files as they are received - the freeware BitTorrent is a good one. The output files are then saved as the same as what went into the torrent in the first place, be they ZIP files for example, or music files such as mp3. It takes longer to download a torrent than it does normal downloads, but uses much less bandwidth. Essentially the more parallel servers you are connected to (automatically via the program software) then the faster the download will complete.

Oh, i thought 'torrent' had to do with piracy, because of the name.

The issue here is that pirated software seems to be the most prevalent in torrents. Granted there are a few legitmate freeware downloads out there that use torrents, such as the Netherlands 2000 scenery, but keep in mind when doing searches for free FS2004 stuff, probably 99% of anything that would pop up as a torrent is pirated payware.
If I were you, I would just browse through the file libraries of major FS sites such as this one, Avsim, Flightsim.com, Sim-Outhouse, Avsim.ru, FSNordic, etc.

I certainly wouldn't advertise the fact that you're searching for pirated software.... Roll Eyes

I wouldn't say he was....... I'd type in something like "Free Flight Sim 2004 Stuff" to look for a freeware site like SimV.

.torrents.... You use uTorrent or one of those programs and then use uTorrent to download the actual file. A torrent is a torrent. The actual file needs to be found off a seeder on uTorrent and I can't imagine seeders seed FS2004 stuff Grin

Nevermind....

For some reason, I initially thought be was deliberately searching for FS payware addons as torrent files to download, rather than FS addons in general.

Didn't mean to cause a missunderstanding.... Wink
