I am getting a new gaming rig in the near future from a local computer store.  They sent a bid today with:

AMD 770 AM2+4D motherboard
AMD Phenom X3 8450 Triple-Core
2GB DDR2 RAM
250GB HD
8600GT 512MB
256 DDR3 video upgrade
Windows XP Pro

Not sure about XP, we might get Vista

That is a decent gaming rig but if you want it to last I would go for the 8800GT 512mb and the 9850 phenom.

I also recommend a bigger card then the 8600. Doesint have much punch.

Good chipset, my mobo is also 770 and its great.

As for Vista, I love it more then XP.

And be aware, that it's a brand new computer, and that all subsequent versions of DirectX  won't be available for XP..   Wink

Go 8800GT, and change to an Intel core 2 quad or one of the faster duals. Smiley

Its been over a year since release now hasn't it?

The only major issue with programs for XP running on Vista are CFS3's multiplayer. Now I have a lot of programs and practically all of them work without a hitch.

Some programs require a simple right click, left click, left click and further left click to get working.

A lot isnt yet built to be compatible on Vista, but a lot still is compatible. Give it another 6 months or so and I don't see why a huge huge majority of the software out there won't be fully or near fully Vista compatible. XP support is also running out soon- its oooooold.

important thing to know, your better off going with an intel core 2 quad than a phenom last i checked. First of all  your getting an extra core, and second of all, the intel chips usually clock faster than the AMD ones, only reason to go with AMD is if you are going to use an ATI vid card....

my rig&&intel q6600 quad core, geforce GTX 280 OCX 1 gig, 4 gigs 800mhz ram, nforce 680i lt sli, 750 gigs hd, dvd rw drive, 23 inch lcd monitor, windows vista ultimate sp2 x64/Win 7 RC x64 dual boot, TrackIR 4 Pro with Trackclip, Razer Lachechis Mouse, Microsoft Sidewinder Precision pro, 5.1 speakers, logitech racing wheel.&&&&my current sims: fsx, falcon 4.0 (modded, red viper or openfalcon, depending on my mood), rfactor, GTR Evolution, il2 1946, X-Plane 9, ArmA 2, Steel Beasts Pro PE

That was the first Phenoms which have been rumoured to be advertised as the x3 Phenoms. The newer Phenoms (9850 etc.) all four work great. I find AMD processors to much better quality even though the performance isn't insane.

I used to have AMD, then I got an Intel... Never going back! It may be a bit more expensive, but it packs much more power! Of course, if you go with an Intel processor, then you have to switch motherboards as well

As for the video card... I highly recommend you go with an 8800

If the RAM is PC6400 800MHz, then you're good. If it's any less, then go for 3GB or just get 2GB of 800MHz

Now... for the OS... I say XP  Wink  Grin
