Who wouldn't use it.

Even if you don't need it and don't think it will be worth the money, it is good to have some protection when you browse unknown sites. The money issue is really over now as there are many free good anti virus and lots of other anti things that can do the job of a bought product. Wink

I have norton on my desktop and half on my laptop.

One 10GB partition is the main perition which I use which is fully active, I am just about to set up another partition which will be 10GB (maybe less) which will be my "show" partition for when I am using my laptop for running sound for shows. This will be a very barebone OS with not much enabled at all and will NOT have AV (as it will not be connected to the Internet).

It also has a 20GB partition, but this is just a data partition which means that I can easily access music fiels ETC, regardless of the OS I am booted into.

You speaketh the truth.
I haven't tried AVG but I really like Trend Micro Internet Security Suite 2008...
Full Vista SP1 compatibility, easy virus removal just all around great. Only down part is, is it takes forever to start up when your computer is starting up.
Norton = Baaaaaaaad.
Removing Norton demos is bad enough.

I have to be honest and say I have never had any problems with norton. Admittedly the older versions were very resourceful but the new 360 I like very much and isn't system heavy at all.

Its not a Love or Hate thing... Wink...!

It's how many years I was prepared to keep forking out to maintain my Annual Subscription for something which was so bleedin' annoying with it's insistence on constantly reminding me of never-ending upgrades, special offers, latest information, etc, etc....
.....with equivalents to it being available for free, and without all the aggravation!

...and you just try to un-install/get rid of it*... Shocked...and see where your problems start...they purposely stop you from doing it...trust me/us...Wink...!

Expensive, Annual Subscription, Anti-Virus programs are OK for Companies, and Big Organisations...but for us lowly Folks, down below, there are excellent Free versions available out there that do the job to our general satisfaction...Wink...!

Mr. Norton is in the business of extracting our Cash...Wink..!

Paul...G-BPLF... Cool

I use the free version of AVG 8.0 also.

I had nothing but problems with BOTH Norton and McAfee.  Norton just dogged the computer down all to heck.  And yes... like Foz says, removing it is like removing a bad virus.

McAfee ended up totally trashing a hard drive on me with an "automatic update".   It updated... and I could no longer access ANYTHING on the hard drive.  My own passwords no longer worked.  My computer shop folks couldn't fix it either.  They said that I'd just have to re-format the drive and start over.  Lost some un-backed up data on THAT one.

AVG.... simple, light weight, free, and nary a virus problem.  For a company site, I'd recommend the paware stuff of theirs in a second.

best,

.............john

In 6 days my Norton360 runs out... cant wait. It will also mark my first year of owning Vista!

I always have my Anti-Virus on. AVG and Norton... Spybot for spyware.

I dont do full scans all that often as they take so long, but occasionally in a holiday or at a weekend I will leave my machine on to defrag, scan spyware and for viruses and all that.

I've been on the internet since it's inception. I've never run any type of anti-virus software.

I've gotten ONE virus in that time (and I know perfectly well, where I got it  Embarrassed )

I keep all my important stuff backed up.. and if  I DO ever have to format because of a virus... that's less of a head-ache, and about as time-consuming, as installing and updating and running and monitoring anti-virus stuff.

Don't open email from strangers  .. stay away from naughty websites .. and you'll be just fine   Wink

Open a Gmail account for free and leave all viruses (if any) on Googles server. E-mails are scanned by Google before displaying them to you....

Well Norton is already nagging with 4 days left (this nagging started 26 days ago)

Four pop-ups just then reminding me that my program is about to expire. Yeh, I sort of gathered that after the first one  Angry

Will try and remove it soon (key word, try) and fall back on my AVG. Might get the payware version if I still have an old license hanging around somewhere... I know I did have some but they might have run out.

I got a virus scanner since the first days online, back then i got a whacky download from a trusted website, wich turned out was hacked, and it ruined my system.

nowadays i find it important since my brother found out someone tried to break into our home network, since then everything has been changed, a full computer is now dedicated to scanning all the network traffic, inbound and outbound.

Norton craftily infiltrates many parts of your Registry in your Hard Drive.....and although it is possible to delete the entries, one by one, It requires GREAT CARE and a infinite knowledge of the Registry!
(Ozzy gave the instructions in one of the forums here).

Otherwise, it means Formating the Hard drive to delete the whole Registry!...which is what I had to do!!
(Uninstalling/Deleting Norton doesn't work!).
