6 days war campaign in CFS (Read 4478 times)

Wink Hi,

I'm new here. I'm happy to find a forum about CFS1 and see a lot of people continue to play with this game after so many years !!!Personally, I began flight simulation 17 years ago with Su-25 Stormovik, then with CFS1 (in 1998) and finally with CFS2 and Il-2. Among all these sims, CFS1 remains my favorite  Smiley

I would like to try making missions for CFS and explore another period : jet combat during 6 days war of 1967. I like early jets so much as WW2 warbirds, especially soviet Migs. It would be a campaign on egyptian side, during the 6 days and after, during the "attrition war". I think it would be possible in CFS1, because at this time, air to air missiles were not very effective and cannons remain the main weapons in combat. I currently working on aircraft painting and panel making. For the moment, I have the three main egyptian fighters : MiG-17 (in fact a Mig-15), 19 and 21. I also made some Israeli AI from FS98 aircrafts. About scenery, missions will use the excellent Egypt airbases from Andre Lederer (FS98).

Now, I'm searching people who are interested by this this project and would like to test my missions, give advices, critics, etc.

In advance, thanks a lot for your replies,  Cool

Best regards (sorry if my English isn't perfect, I'm French speaking native).

Here, sample of MiG-17 paint scheme (not finished) and a MiG-19 panel (alphasim Bitmap and soviet cyrillics gauges from all around).

I made up a MiG15 panel some time ago, myself, using an actual photo as a segmental reference (the px was taken off-angel so I had to adjust the viewpoint).

...

I made the gunsight unit slightly smaller and incorporated a seperate window so that one can fly with or without a gunsight. The gauges are altered from stock with cyrillic characters but I'm not well versed in Russian so I can't promise that I've employed proper abbreviations.

Nice panel Smiley It seems realistic in general aspect, especially the bitmap. I like the WW2 style of early MiGs cockpits...

Good news : the painting job of MiG-17 is finished. Below, you can find pictures of final aspect of the plane. It's a depiction of a standard pattern of Egyptian Air Force MiG-17 in 1967. It will be available for download in this thread in some days.

Today, I also began mission creating. Always with the MiG-17, I tested the first mission on Cairo West, an important egyptian airbase and the results are pretty good. I'm hoping to post a beta version in some days too (perhaps at the end of the week)... At the same time, I'll post links to download scenery and other addons useful for the whole campaign to come.  Cool

Decent, but a suggestion...
with darker acft skins it's not quite so prominent but with lighter colored ones, especially with how textures get stretched around the poly visual, it's much more so; when applying skin seems it is better to either utilize only a single px line or else two lines, each only one px wide. One a slightly darker shade than the texture and the other a slightly lighter shade (howbeit, each line may be made up of varying pixel shades, as well).

My (unhistorical) repaint for an F6F assigned to CVL-25 Cowpens ("The Mighty Moo"):

Top View - I should have made the seem lines lighter in the star

My paint for a P51C:

Thanks for these technical advices Wink. I'm sure they'll be useful to me for next repaints. I'll try to "upgrade" the MiG-17's painting too...

Just a question : for painting job, I use a freeware (texbmp) to convert r8 to bitmap, repaint, and then convert bitmap to r8. Now, I wonder if someone knows a software which allows to work directly on the plane and give a 3d preview during you're painting ? Thanks for replies.

Best regards  Cool

CFS1 will utilize bitmap, AF or R8 textures located in the Texture folder no matter what they are named -- even without a file extension. However, it is limited to applying these textures according to the .mdl (meaning that a texture without a file extension would have to be named with no extension in the .mdl). Because the px layout is the same with AF and bitmap, they are easily exchangable with only name changes. The same problem occurs with the R8 textures for editing/replacing them; converted to bitmap or AF, the replacement AF or bitmap texture only needs to be renamed as the R8 -- or else the more difficult and dangerous procedure to change the relevant texture naming in the .mdl (making certain you replace original name entries byte by byte so that you don't alter the .mdl file size). This latter method, however, alleviates the compromise of textures in the aircraft selection menu when alternate aircraft versions are perused, whereas those having the same texture names often show up with original rather than the alternates in the menu (although there should be no problem after selected for the actual employment).

Hi everyone, Smiley

Here you can find my very first mission with MiG-17. I post all the links for download, I hope they'll work. If don't, try on my webpage here (http://cfs1jet.site.voila.fr/). In a few words, you must defend an airbase against Israeli air attack.

The plane :

The AI aircrafts :
http://cfs1jet.site.voila.fr/AI_Aircrafts.zip

Cairo West airbase scenery :

And mission :

-----

I think the MiG-17 is quite easy to fly. With 80% of realism settings and G effects disabled, it's perfect. The guns are very effective, but you have only 200 rounds in total. So, for a better result, spare ammo and fire only within 250-150 feets. Just a thing again : sometimes, MiG-17 is low to start on runway ; this "bug" can be resolved with 65% fuel setting before mission.

So I hope some people will be interested by this jet mission and send comments about their impressions. Perhaps is it too easy or too hard, I don't know... Huh In fact, it's my very first attempt to make a CFS mission, so I rely on your indulgence.  Wink Enjoy !

Best regards Cool.

That's quite a project for a first attempt. I'm not sure how many people still use CFS1 or how many will read this thread. Good luck! Smiley
