I am running IE7 and also have Firefox installed.  I have attempted to download some of the files available via the website, and keep getting timeouts.

I have even gone to the effort of making this site a "Trusted Site" for IE and still to no avail.  I keep getting timeouts when trying to download the files.

I have tried turning off my firewall and found that the website then prompts for an FTP login to access the files.

Firefox just times out.  I am in Western Australia, so not sure if this is happening because the server is kaput or being backed up.  I know if I go to work in the morning and use IE6 there (which has a proxy firewall) I can download the files without a problem.

Is the server backing up at the times I am trying to download it??  I am writing this message at 5:03pm Western Australian / Australia time.  Any help would be appreciated as there are a couple of planes that I would really like to fly.

Hey thanks for the reply there Paul.

No I do not have any problems with accessing any other sites.  I have accessed various other Flight Sim websites that have downloads available and they all work perfectly fine.  In fact at one point I was downloading about 8 files at once from another website.  So it's not the PC or my ISP.

Hi,
Sorry you're having trouble.

You haven't said if you've been through some likely causes mientioned here

Occasionally we've been having record levels of downloading and the ftp connections (free area) have been timing out for some. I can see there are always a ton of ftp downloads going on so it IS just for some. Generally, after some recent work (reboot Wink,  the servers have been coping well.

I've just tried myself & it seems to be working fine for me on a dsl connecting to the ftp downloads.

If you have continued problems please get back here & let me know as much as you can & I will try to help further.

Please also note you are restricted to 2 connections at one time - so that may also be a factor.  Wink. (All major FS sites restrict free access simply because it is unviable to have unlimited access to files and we could simply not exist if we did)

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the response.  I have now checked this today and using the tips on getting downloads have compiled the following.  Basically I just can not get access to download anything at all.

Web Browser
* Using IE7 with browser settings set low, privacy set to low and the website set as a "Trusted Source", pop-up blockers disabled

* Using Firefox

Firewalls
* Windows firewall not running, security centre turned off.
* Added server IP to allow traffic at all times
* Have turned off firewall as well

No Download Manager software running
No Opera Browser installed
Not running through a Proxy server at home - works fine on my work proxy server

Machine is cold booted everyday

Ran a tracert on www.simviation.com with a full trace all the way back to the server with no problems

Tracing route to www.simviation.com [205.252.250.27]

over a maximum of 30 hops:

Trace complete.  (note removed some of the IP addresses referencing my IP).

I did however run a pathping to the server and there is a 100% failure at once hop.  Looks like the problem might possibly be the hosting site for simviation??

I connected my girlfriend's computer to my network and again attempted to download the files, this time with success.  The only difference that I can see here is that her machine is running IE6.  It works fine with Internet Explorer 6 as I am able to download a file finally.

Obviously something with my workstation not allowing it to download any files from Simviation at all.

On further investigation of my PC to see what was causing the issue, I found that the Microsoft Firewall on my workstation had re-enabled itself after I had turned off "security centre" and also disabled it from running altogether so that I am able to use my own solutions.

Thanks for the help Pete and everyone else, now I just have to go find a way to permanently remove MS Firewall from starting itself, even though it's been set not to.  I am so annoyed at the moment.

Hi Fozzer,

Not sure if you saw that I had tried Firefox as well with the same problems.  So far IE7 hasn't caused me many problems and I prefer it to Firefox.  I did use Firefox for quite sometime but found it lacking in certain areas so moved back to IE.   Cheesy

No problems Fozzer, but as my job is working with computers, if a computer problem does occur then I need to find out what has caused it, why it broke and how to stop it from happening again.  However I do relax by taking a spin in the Extra 300S around Rio De Janiero in Brazil.  Now that is very relaxing.   Grin

Hi, Can you be specific about what is happening & maybe provide a screenshot of a specific incidence?

You need to be sure you have tried all the suggestions here. By far the most common cause is the latest IE  browser (still waiting on a reason). If it doesn't work with Firefox either you need to think of all the software you have running that can effect internet connections.

I am eager to help you resolve this so the more info you can give the better.

Hi,
Unfortunately that screenshot doesn't tell me anything.  Cool

Can you try another using Firefox and without all the other programs in the background?

I'll break down my problem:

Three months ago, I tried downloading from the site. I couldn't. I got a "This Page Connot Be Displayed" message. At first I suspected a busy server. After a week I gave up on this idea. I went to the Access Prob page

This is in response to the Access Prob page:

My computer has been rebooted several times since this problem came up.
I have disconnected and reconnected my service.
I do not believe that I have ever used a download manager.
I have internet explorer version 6.0.2900.2180
I tried firefox but no dice
Checked Zone Alarm, seems fine.
I dont have opera browser
I am not using a proxy
I did the tracert thing, no *s or timeouts

Still nothing

PS: What the screen shot is showing is that I can get the pop-up window, but can't download.

EDIT 5/11 Not meaning to sound impatient but... Any Ideas?

I've had the same problems as you for the past few months. I tried to download Todayshorse's repaint for the AFG Kingair B300 and it wouldn't let me, so I tried everything. The only thing that worked is downloading GetRight and using that to download within IE7. I'm downloading it as we speak. Hope that works for you  Cool

Dude above me... How big is the file that it downloads?

Seems like your problem is connecting to an FTP server.

We have temporarily switched back to the FTP server for non members while a problem is being fixed.

Hi Paul,

The fact that you have posted here means you are reaching our server.

If you are having trouble with a tracert try temporarily turning off your firewall to see if this makes a difference - if it does your firewall may need to have simviation added as a trusted site.

If you can be specific about what problem you are having I can try to help. Thanks

Hi Pete,
Thanks for your reply. I turned off my Windows Firewall, but still no luck. I also have simviation as trusted sites under Internet options.
What I get is the "Download this file now!" page and when I click on it I get the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" page... sorry I don't know yet how to post a picture on this reply!  Undecided

Cheers

Hi - sounds like an Internet Explorer setting.

Try Firefox. If that resolves your problem then it's IE.

You could try this: (found in a tech forum)

Quote:
Try going to Accessories - System Tools - Internet Explorer (No Add-Ons) and
see if ie7 will connect to the internet. If so - it's cookies or an add-on
that's causing the problem. Close the browser and go to Start - Run - type in
inetcpl.cpl, Select Delete Browsing History - and delete temporary internet
files & cookies. Click on the Security Tab & select "Reset all zones to
default level" at the bottom. Click on the Content tab and select "Clear SSL
state". Click on the Advanced Tab, under "Browsing" clear the check from the
"Enable third-party browser extensions". Click OK at the bottom & reopen ie7
from the normal ie7 icon & you should connect.

Hey Pete,
I appreciate your patience.
I tried with Firefox but it also came out with a network timeout. Then I tried everything on the list that you sent me, but still nothing. I even did a "Restore advanced settings" and a "Reset" on the Internet properties' Advanced tab.

So you know I recently upgraded my windowsXP to SP3. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it. I never got a chance download anything from Simviation with this PC when it was on SP2.

Thanks

Have you tried disabling your firewall?

If you run a tracert where does it get to?

Nothing changed. Have you tried another PC? I think you need to take a look at your PC settings -- firewall -- browser -- any other apps you may have running that could effect browsing - such as home network (On that try another PC on your home network)

I run 4 PC's at home -  2XP, 2Vista/3 plugged in, 1 wireless/1old, 3 new/ etc

The only time I had a problem lately was when a Windows XP auto update on XP caused Zone Alarm to stop connections. I updated Zone Alarm & all was fine again. I haven't added anything - all connection settings are default. No problems connecting to files or site.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of modem do you have? Is it possible that it is a modem problem?

The reason I ask is because a few years ago, I suddenly had no internet on dial up.  I called BellSloth and found out they had upgraded overnight and no longer supported my "stone-age" modem.

Out of interest I would ask you something again  - if you don't mind.

Can you show your download problem occurring in Firefox? Screenshot?

I have asked you this before & you haven't done it .... I still suspect your problem lies in a very simple solution - namely your Internet Explorer setup or wireless connection to your home network.

Showing Firefox (I'd like to see the shot) will eliminate (in my mind) IE as being the 1st suspect ....   Cool Wink

Nothing changed. Have you tried another PC? I think you need to take a look at your PC settings -- firewall -- browser -- any other apps you may have running that could effect browsing - such as home network (On that try another PC on your home network)

1. I have one PC at my house. It runs XP. I have IE6.
2. I have download managers, but they were installed recently. I dont use them for this stuff. They do not monitor IE.
3. My internet is dial-up.
4. I have no problem with any other sites.
5. I have checked both Zone Alarm and IE for anything that would affect downloading at simviation. No Problems
6. I added simviation as a trusted site: no effect.
7. I tried Firefox: did not help (and since you keep insisting, I'll reinstall Firefox and show you the problem later)

Anything else that might help?

Can you say exactly what happens? It would help .....  Wink
You also haven't said that you have read and followed the 'problems accessing files?' suggestions linked to in every download page
