Operation Flashpoint is an old (2001) military sim with an enormous amount of free addons! Being old, the graphics are obviously lacking when compared to newer games, but it sure is enjoyable! With the mission editor and 3rd party addons, it is actually possible to simulate almost any military conflict that has ever occured!
These shots
(brightness increased)
show a line of Su-33 Flankers, a Bundeswehr CH-53G, and a Vietnam-era Bell UH-1D.

...

...

...

Enjoy, and as always...thanks for looking!

Hey i got ArmA and if you are considering buying it don't! They are bringing out ArmA 2 very soon and that is much much much better than arma and flashpoint, ArmA 1 is still really good though.

I also think that in 1 or 2 years...pure guess as to the time based on forum speculation....that OFP2 will come out. This is probably the most interesting sequel set for a game I have came across.
Basically put, the two main developers of OFP 1 split after they made the game, but they both wanted to produce a sequel.
Codemasters, who has the rights to the OFP name, is currently producing Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising, for release in a few years.
Bohemia Interactive, the other developer, is working on the Armed Assault (ArmA) series which basically seems to be like the FSX scenario in the FS world. Much OFP classic code, rehashed with updated graphics. Same basic gameplay though.
As for what OFP2 will be like...I have no idea!

Esselbach,
For addons, simply make sure that you have the original OFP game, along with the Resistance expansion pack, and that the game is patched to at least version 1.91. Then, after downloading an addon, put the ".pbo" file in your OFP/Res/Addons folder and your set!

I have ArmA, as much as I'd like to get into it I have difficulty sticking with it...

...see....I just plain suck at it. Cheesy

More then half the time I can't really figure out where I'm supposed to be going or what I need to be doing. Also, I find I tend to get shot to bits before I even know where the enemy troops are so I have no idea where I'm even getting shot from. When I try to play it, it's generally a very frustrating experience for me  Grin

Doesn't mean its a bad game though - I realize the above is due to my own short-comings.

Layne SimViator, I'm not quite sure why you are thinking that OFP2 will be crap, since there is still very little info available...but to avoid a confrontation, we'll just agree to disagree on this matter.

Sovien, yes OFP, (and ArmA), is extremely realistic in most respects.....it just takes getting used to....happened to all of us when we started out.  Wink

Have a nice weekend everyone!

As SeanTK said yes it is very realistic, have you got all patches up to 1.11 aswell? most people forget, also the best mods to have for ArmA are, AACFSOUND, ArmAEffects, RH Weapon Packs, XAM 1.4:5, Desert Warfare mod and VTE. Get them and you'll have the best arma experience you can, BTW press M for the map with the briefing of the missions Cheesy

I am saying OFP2 will suck compared to ArmA2, ArmA2 is not allowed to stuff up because not only will they have PC players angry at them they will also have X360 and PS3 players angry if they stuff up, thats right they are going for the nextGen consoles aswell.

Also, be sure to check out Bad Company AKA Battle Field 3 Cheesy Will be awesome. Wink

I don't expect to see ARMA2 until next year. They originally said April of this year and have allready moved it back to fourth quarter. The reason most people don't have high hopes for Operation Flashoint 2 is that it is being designed by a totally diffrent group of programers. Ubisoft own the right to the name Operation Flashpoint even though Bohemian Interactive desighned it. They are also the designers of ArmA (Armed Assult in Europe) Atari has just realeased ARMA Gold (a couple of weeks ago) with the add on Queens Gambit included.  I would not hesitate to buy it as there is least another solid year of playing it before ARMA2 is ready. Ubisoft is trying to have OFP2 on store shelves before ARMA2 and that always leads to a rushed project in my book.

There is a new mod called ECS that is by far the best mod to comeout for ARMA. Check out http://www.armedassault.info/ for almost all available mods. Check out what ECS does here http://www.ecsteam.online.fr/index.php?watch=intro

A couple of things to make this game run better for people who are having problems....  Make sure you go into your video card settings and force Vsync off. It is automatically turned on in the game. I got a 50 percent frame rate increase by turning that off and my texture quality down to performance.

The next thing you need to do is go into the arma config and turn the AI down to about 3.5 versus 7.5. Makes them shoot much more like untrained 3rd world soldiers than the games original AI that will snipe you from 700 yards with an AK in the forehead.

My favorite place to learn about ARMA is SIMHQ there ARMA forum is here http://www.simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=100&page=1 They also have the best server going.

If you have it and have not tried it in a while you should update to the newest beta 1.11 . A ton a fixes and much smoother gameplay with the settings I posted above.

And last but not least www.gettacticaldammit.com is a great place to learn alittle about the tactics in the game.

I thought I would download the demo for Armed Assault, but when I install and try to run it, the screen goes blank for a minute or so, and then this is what I get:

Any ideas?

Video Driver issue most likely. What card are you using? Check for any version updates. Also, check out the FAQ at the ArmA website to see if there are any "known" video driver issues with certain cards.

EDIT: Opp, just saw your sig. >.< Still would advise checking your driver version and the website.

There is next to no news on OFP2 yet you say it will suck compared to another game - that you also have not used? Ridiculous.

i got ArmA, i'm completely addicted to it

i warn you though, this is not your everyday run-n-gun FPS game, it is supposed to be realistic and for that reason you should play it like that as well... it's plain suicide to go charging ahead in this game expecting to see the white in your enemies eyes when you shoot him down... this game has no place for the spray-and-pray method

that's why i like it... there are no 12 year old noobs playing much, since they get discouraged fast (no offence to 12 year old gamers that play nicely) and there is a degree of team play in ArmA that unlikely to be seen in any other shooting game

the best multiplayer mission for me a coop mission called Evolution... V2 and V3 (the modded versions will in most cases strip the point of team playing out of the whole thing)

this mission i almost like a mini-shooting-rpg game, where you level up  in rank, and with that you get to drive more of the vehicles that are parked in our base and call in for different kinds of support (even a tactical ICBM)... plus the mission gives you points for pretty much anything that helps your team... evolution can run for a whole day or even more, since the main objective is to conquer ALL o the map's cities as you fight against hordes and hordes of enemy AIs (which are quite chalenging)

if you haven't tried it yet, do it... it is probably the best thing to do in ArmA

the only drawback is that you can't use your addons in it (obviously)

BTW, did i hear V22 for ArmA? that would be sweet

Cheers

That's why I wanted to get it. People running around with machine guns bunny hopping all over the place were starting to annoy me.... Roll Eyes

btw, I did solve my problem I had earlier in the thread. ArmA doesn't like more than 3gb of ram.

hmm... did you have to pull a ram module out to fix it? or did you do it some other way?

i'm upgrading to a new rig with 4GB or maybe more RAM, so this might afflict me in the near future

i hope ArmA 2 doesnt have this problem

Simply Load up Msconfig in Vista, and you can specify how much ram, processor cores, ect to boot up with. Very easy, and only takes a few moments. Though you would have to change it, and reboot your system everytime you want to play the game
