I have been a simmer (and painter) for a very long time now, though I have never really learned how paints are applied to models (where they need to be).  Most planes I repaint have doors, winglets, etc. in the image.  How does the simulator take these pieces and put them where they go on the model??  What tells them where to put it? I've always wanted to know how modelers make paints/paintkits for their planes...

Hi Giteen

The modeller lays templetes of the various parts onto the texture map then maps the model part to the correct image area as a series of X-Y co-ordinates

The map co ordinates are saved with the part and FS calls in that area of the texture map and applies it to the part.

This is why you you have to use the correct texture maps for any  partucular model.
