Im sure this question may have been asked before but i am a bit short on time to look at this moment anyway I have flight simulator x and I was wondering if there was anyway to rip the game models to work in 3d studio max. Now I have been around a few model sites and seen that some people are charging up to $300 for a 747 that looks suspiciously identical to the one in flight sim x. The only way i knew it was a rip was because of the livery design that is unique to the game. I am not interested in selling the models, i just need them for 3d animation

Here in the Microsoft Flight Simulator Community, such talk is forbidden. Anyone speaking of it will be tied to an iron chair with spikes while forcefully being spoon fed with marmalade by one of our mods.

Nah, just kidding. Our mods wouldn't do that. But seriously, we folks frown on any topic that talks about reverse engineering a compiled model from the FS series due to the legal issues it brings.

It's sorta possible that what you saw was a rip, but I'm more inclined to believe that they took the livery from FS and then mapped their model to it.

I wonder: is that illegal?  If you weren't selling the textures themselves, would there be any legal ramifications?

Because, as I see it, that would be wholly logical to do this since the FS models have the best frame-rates of anything out there.  The fewer texture maps per model, the easier the loading is on the system.  The textures aren't great, but they're adequate to get the job done.  You could then make the textures larger, repaint the required areas and have a decently detailed model.

Of course, if this is illegal or immoral I'm not aware of it . . .
