As some of you might know I might have to result to build my own gaming rig soon. Yes I know I haven't asked anything about hardware yet. I will soon.

I am planning to use my computer mostly for gaming with some high graphics. Planning to run FS9 FSX and other flight simulations. Will use it for basic daily use. I haven't thought of any more uses than that.

I would want high perfomence from it. Stable, reliable, little problems. I have heard Vista has little problems with networking and drivers so that will be an issue.

I am used to XP and trust it but I might need to move up to Vista soon enough.

What do you think I should use?

Thanks Smiley

More games are going to be coming out as vista compatible, and perhaps soon vista only.

The OS is stable... I have been using it for nearly a year now... FS9 and FSX work fine. I have got all the drivers I need for my hardware, and everything works.

Vista, in my opinion, is a much nicer OS to use (after the few days of getting used to it) and it will last you for quite a while. With my current system I am about about 56% RAM usage and 20% CPU usage when I use it for general things.

Get a good processor, atleast 2gb RAM, a nice graphics card and it wont take much out of your performance having Vista running.

Vista. I run FSX high-maxed 10-50fps
x2 2.5ghz
3gbs RAM
320gb HD
vista HP
22" monitor.
I would recomend no less than 3gbs of RAM. Vista chews up 1 gb and FSX chews up 1.5gbs and crysis eats it all.

I've been afraid to try that or crystalxp.net stuff with all the changes it makes. If you want to remove it does it uninstall completely?

For me, at the moment, Win XP aint broke, so no point in trying to fix it...Wink...!

Plus...I need all my "old" operating systems to run all my zillions of (old) Games...

I have vastly more "old" games than "new" ones...Wink...!

Well...I have been reading up and see that Vista doesn't perform as well as XP on 3D games. I have a hunch I'll be going back to XP when I do my build.

I guess if it's a home build I would do XP but my HP's vista just totally rocks crysis and FSX.

Well for me right now xp, but when a few more driver versions are released and maybe see what SP1 does I'll switch I think Vista is a better operating system at the core than xp is, IMPO. And to see how much more is going on behind the scenes and how much more complex in gerneral I think the perfomance is pretty good in Vista overall. And maybe in a while it will be the preferd gaming platform. It has the potential I think.

So many 'thinks'. Grin

Well SP1 for Vista from what I read doesn't really have a huge noticible effect on Vista. It doesn't seem to make huge differences like SP2 of XP.

Wii....

Help us out here...

You are running Vista and FSX...

If Vista and FSX is such a good set-up on your computer, tell us why we constantly see you desperately trying to connect with our Server during our FS 2004 Multiplayer Flights...

..and having absolutely no success whatsoever.... Shocked...!

connect...disconnect....connect...disconnect...etc...etc... Wink...!

I was flying on line on Sam's Server continuously yesterday for 10+ hours without a problem, or a single break in the connection, which I do every day of the week, and watching various other FS 2004 Pilots flying without any problems whatsoever, courtesy of FS Navigator.... Smiley...!

This lets me know whether the pilots are using FS 2004 or FSX at the time...>>>

I rarely spot any FSX Pilots there!...Wink..!
There has to be something wrong with their system!

Win XP and FS 2004 gives me no problems every day, whether on-line or not, so why should I want to tempt fate?... Roll Eyes...!

Paul...G-BPLF...FS '98 + FS 2000 + FS 2002 + FS 2004 + FSX... Cool...!

Or... they're flying on servers where they don't have to run a 3rd party app to connect  Wink

And... soon enough 64bit apps will be the norm.. and computers needing 4+GB of RAM will be the norm.... AND.. ensuing generations of DirectX will push us all, not only into Vista.. but into 64bit Vista.

Resistance is futile  Cheesy
