Folks,

Got a puzzlement about FS[9] and CFS.  They are both related.

In a nutshell, in the old days of dial-up I could see other players airplanes even when I didn't have their's in my hangar, whether it was FS2002Pro or CFS.  I know I know,...I've read all the posts about it here that it don't work that way anymore.

Rather than try to copy in my lengthly detailed explanation and testing done of what I mean; posted with pictures and whatnot, I ask you to read the thread at

http://forums.netwings.org/forums/showthread.php?t=10620

Would sure like your opinions.

Thanks for your indulgence.

KC
ooops, am I allowed to post a link yet as this is my first post? If not, I'll cut and paste what I wrote in a reply to this.  We'll see when I hit 'post'

edit: although it first talks about CFS, follow on posts get into FS9

Well, the verdict is in.  Please read the thread again I posted at that website in previous post.  The responses were overwhelming.

..I don't know about seeing other folks non-Default aircraft after modifying the .cfg File as you suggest, but as far as I can remember, it has always been possible to see other Folks moving animations; Landing gear, Flaps, Rudder, Ailerons, Elevators, etc...in Multiplayer....Wink...!

The "Seeing other Folks non-Default Aircraft" has only been possible if you have exactly the same Aircraft, with the same Textures, in your Hangar... Roll Eyes...!

I've never flown online in any version of CFS/FS. Some years ago I asked the regular Multiplayer fanatics here to try this out for me in FS2002. Of course, it would only work if every player in the session did the tweak. The result was much the the same as yours & the silence was deafening.

I still don't know if that CFG tweak works & unless someone is prepared to try it I have no way of finding out. Frustrating isn't it? Roll Eyes

Hi there,

I´m not shure if I understand you correctly.
Well, however.

1. You need more than 3 ports open on your router.
read this for details what ports need to be opened when using
a specific MSFS.
http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1148901173

2. Seeing another players addon aircraft does not depend on the ports.
If your ports are closed, you won´t be able to connect at all.
Sometimes it does work, but in that case other players won´t be able to connect. In very rare cases it can happen that you don´t see other players at all, not even with just default aircraft.

3. I tried to change the config like you did, too.
(ALLOW_PLANE_MODEL_SEND=1 and so on...)
But it never worked for me. Probabely this feature simply
isn´t supported with FS2004. I could imagine this was removed
because of payware addons (just speculating).

There are two possibilities to make another players addon aircraft show
up. Download an install it as well Smiley
But you can also define a substitute aircraft. For example. You friend owns some payware aircraft you can´t just download. But you have
the same aircraft model like a P-51 as freeware installed on your computer. In this case open the the aircraft config of your model
and change the line "title" to the exact name your friends model.

[fltsim.0]
title=some title

sim=some model
model=
panel=

for example.

You´re config looks like this

title=P51-freeware

His config looks like this

title=P51-payware

If you change your "title" to "P51-payware" as well, the P51 you have installed will show up as your friends aircraft.

This works for FS2004. With FSX in conjunction with "FSHost Client"
you can just select a model from your installed airplanes from a menue.

regards,

sam

Hi sam. The point is that all players would have to do this tweak for it to work.

I modified my .cfg file as soon as I read this post, so it now depends on someone else doing the same thing, to see if it works...

I am generally chuffing around the skies in FS 2004 Multiplayer, most days...Wink...!

Wow, talk about a bad day.  Composed reply, then lost internet connection.

Where was I before I was rudely interrupted.

Reply follows:

Folks

Thank you thank you thank you.

I really felt alone in the wilderness on this one.

I've got to re-read everything you wrote over again....I am excited, confused, happy, etc.

As for 'it don't work that way',...my point is....it did!!!

If I only 'told' you about it I could understand most folks disbelief.

But I had screenshots to prove what I saw.  So it wasn't me just smokin' some funny stuff.

Anyway, here are the ports I have forwarded/opened for CFS, FS9 and Teamspeak [server].  Yup, for FS9, I got the ports required from Simviation's FSHost server.

Heck....me and my buddy even DMZ'd the router and opened all my ports to see if that would make a difference.

Not!

Anyway,...I can exhale now.  Its not my imagination.

I am not nuts.

KC
maybe we meet on Simviation's FSHost MP Server sometimes or maybe some of you close friends can do a test.  I'm game for anything at this point; even getting a dial-up service.

ps - yes...everybody in the game got to change their .cfg files; else no joy.

crosses fingers as I hit 'post'.

pssss - see the latest [last] screenshot in my last post on that other forum showing the mulitplayer screenshot of 'just seeing' animations.  And I got some beachfront property for sale in Arizona.

I changed my FS9.cfg to see if it'll work. Probably not as long as not everyone makes the same changes. What worries me the most is this; if it works wouldn't the bandwidth being used by sending models and textures back and forth reach it's limit very soon, thus resulting in stutters and other problems?

...I have this funny feeling that it probably wont work, otherwise Uncle Bill would have designed the program to allow all Aircraft to be seen in Multiplayer, both Default and Add-on!..Wink...!

To ensure compatibility, I always select Bill's Default Aircraft during on-line, Multiplayer flights with my Chums... Kiss...!

...saves a lot of argument, confusion, and endless on-line discussion...Wink...!

Two good observations folks.

But as far as bandwidth goes, whatever the bandwidth is for a telephone got to be smaller than cable/Dsl and we didn't get stutters.  I'm not technical enough to understand bandwidth.

As for Uncle Bill,...well....he did put those entries in the [Multiplayer] Section of the fs9.cfg file; so it's his 'doings'.

I will try to do a test flight with just one of my friends who is willing to change his fs9.cfg file to confirm whether it works with cable or not.

That is the whole point of my post.

I have a ton of addons in my hangar, as probably most of you do.  So do others that fly online.

The thing is,....we both may not have the same interests in aviation.  Me...I got a lot of beautiful World War II warbirds, bombers, etc..  Others may go for modern fighter jets, helicopters, etc..  Heck even the AirBus 380!

Shouldn't be a need to fill up each other's hangars with all....just so we can see each other properly.

But I do appreciate your continued interest in the subject.

Tell you what,...this coming week I'll connect with Simviation's FSHost Server in a Lancaster bomber, airport ID KHEF [Manassas Regional in Virginia] in parking [any one of them] and you come join me there, but don't tell me what airplane you are in.

One or the other will taxi towards the other to see what we look like.

My pilot name will be....KC Jones...natch.

Again my thanks for your interest.

If it don't work,...then I guess I'll just have to enjoy all those wonderful eye-candy downloads in the privacy of my own home... Undecided

Take care,

KC
edit: I shouldn't have used the word "willing".  Most folks don't even know where the FS9.cfg is located.  Even walking them to it,..they are hesitant to change anything because....."it might mess up everything..its working now".  Well, if Uncle Bill didn't want us to see each other's model he wouldn't have put those lines in the Multiplayer section.

My apoligies G-BPLF [Paul] for my sudden fly-over at LOWK today.

I was sitting at KHEF just waiting for someone.  I didn't realize that when you join the Simviation FSHost server that you get all the 'chat box' across your screen even tho you're not at a particular airport, but get it worldwide.

While sitting there I clicked on the buttons of my joystick that I use for my brother when teaching him, IP to IP; that is....CTRL SHIFT T to bring up a list of players in MP; and then CTRL SHIFT F to follow them.

Your name unfortunately was selected and I mistakenly pushed the 'follow' button.  Thus the sudden 'whoosh' over your head.  I hope I didn't mess you folks up and scare the dickens outta you.

Sorry.  I did not know that would beam me from Virginia to Austria.

One thing tho; I want to use the Simviation Teamspeak, but I can't find any explanation of the many Channels there.  Could you point me to a description please?

Thanks,

KC

Thanks Fozzer [I'll get your name right  Lips Sealed]

Good toot on Teamspeak, but needs to emphasize "push to talk" instead of voice-activated.  No biggy.

No router!  As Tina Turner would sing "what's routers got to do with it".  Shocked

But here's what I meant about the Simviation Teamspeak and the many rooms in it.  I don't know the protocol for it nor the FSHost server, and yes, I got the VC-GPS players thingy.

And also the protocol for looking at pilots on the ground at an airport ID and wanting to join them.

Chat box: I hear you, but it seemed I was getting chat scrolled across the top o' my window from around the world, at least at the place you were at [LWOK].  Would there be a conflict when I fly with my brother on FSHost and we want to use the chat box?  Seems there would be a lot of chatter going on.  Wink

Anyhoo,...here is my Simviation Teamspeak pix.

Oh by the way,...thanks for your help.  Sorry to be bothering you so.

KC

You could use any of the rooms you like. Since no one on the tours hardly ever uses Teamspeak, just click on one and start yapping away with whomever else is there.
