I am typing this from my other old computer.

Yesterday while I was just on the computer the screen turned blue for half a second and the computer restarted. As it restartedI expected it to go to desktop and show me a report of what happened but instead it restarted as it was starting up. A message was shown for about 5seconds that said something about autochk not found and trying open it up or something. Then it restarted.

I tried to boot using safe mode but that made no diffrence. The system recovery had no effect either. I tried everything in the books that I have but they don't work. Cry

Please help me in anyway. I don't want to revert to reinstalling XP as I don't have the original disks.

If it comes down to removing XP and starting from begining, is there a way to transfer all information from my current HDD to another one without anyting lost?

Thanks

a1 Smiley

EDIT: Here is the original error meassege. I have done some searching and found a possible fix but I want to hear from SimV before doing anything.

Autochk not found -Skipping autochk.exe

Have you been fiddling with the registry at all?

If no one pops in soon, you might wanna contact Microsoft or your HD company.

Well took it to the computer 'specialists' at Fry's Electronics and it would be from 2 weeks to more than 4 to get my computer all prepped up to fix. My computer had to go in a waiting line so that would explain the long wait.

They will restore my computer to factory settings and back up all my files on a 1TB external. I hope all my planes and saved game files won't dissappear during the process or back up. Undecided

This is exactly the same error that happened to me a couple of weeks ago...I had to reformat the HDD and reinstall windows....fortunately I had an external with the whole HDD backed up on it.....even so my PC is now much more sluggish and makes really horrible whiney noises on startup....a new hard drive is being ordered....In my case it was a corrupted registry file.

It might be somthing currupted on my HDD too. I don't think I need to reinstall windows though as It is just restored. I will, however, have to manually put back all the files into it's proper place. That's going to take me weeks. Tongue
