When using Control Left Click to select pictures or files either on my desktop or in a folder XP will suddenly make a copy of everything that is highlighted whilst I am in the middle of selecting. Very annoying if I have already got 50 pictures selected and then end up with 50 copies. It becomes a never ending chase. Highlight the copies to delete and no matter how careful I am when selecting, I end up with 50 copies of copies. Is this an XP problem, me or something else. It drives me mad. Anyone got any ideas........please

Ya where? It sounds like a great tool. But it might be the settings for the mouse that is messed up.

It is an IR mouse, I thought that it was maintenance free.

What setting could that be?

That usually happens when you double click by accident on an already selected picture...My strategy was to go bunch by bunch...10-15 at a time seemed to work Wink

When you are selecting multiple files after you left click the first file you have to hold down the Ctrl key, left click the next file, release the Ctrl key and so on for all the files you want to high-lite. That's just the way it is in XP.  Like you say. If you hold the Ctrl down steady you are going to end up with one bunch of copy's that are a pain in the butt to delete.

How do I select or highlight multiple files?
Question:
How do I select or highlight multiple files?

Answer:
When in Microsoft Windows or any GUI operating system you may need to select multiple files to copy, delete, or move them. Below are some of the different methods of how to select multiple files in a GUI operating system.

Select all the files in the current directory
Select multiple files that are grouped together
Select multiple files that are not grouped together
Other tips

Select all the files in the current directory

With most operating systems and software programs, whenever you need to select everything, the short cut key Ctrl + A will select all files or text.

Microsoft Windows users can also follow the below steps to select all the files in the current directory.

Open the folder or directory you wish to select all the files in Explorer or My Computer.
Click Edit from the top of the window.
Click "Select All"
Select multiple files that are grouped together

If you need to select multiple files that are all grouped together follow the below steps.

Select the first file and then press and hold the Shift key.
While holding the key down click the last file. This will select all the files in-between the first and last file.
Select multiple files that are not grouped together

If there are multiple files you need to copy but they are not grouped together follow the below steps.

Select the first file you want to copy and then press and hold the Ctrl key.
While holding down the Ctrl key, select each of the other files you wish to select.
Other tips

You can use a combination of selecting multiple files and single files at the same time by doing any of the below steps.

Click a file that you wish to start the selection at
Hold down the Shift key and select the last file and then let go of the Shift key.
Now hold down the Ctrl key and any other file you select that is not already select will be added to the group of files already selected. If the selection of files contains files you wish to not have selected, clicking on any selected file will un-select it.

Selecting with Ctrl isn't the issue.  If you hold it down and only click on the files, it will select them.  The files get copied when you move the mouse while selecting one, even if the move is tiny.  The computer interprets this as dragging the files into the folder they're already in and so starts making copies.  If you're careful to keep the mouse steady on the file whilst clicking, you shouldn't have any problems with copying.
