Yes the Lightning really is a first solo - and yes the canopy really is meant to be open!! Story goes that a ground engineer in England with no Previous flying experience was doing an engine test on an RAF Lightning... to cut a long story short the aircraft jumped the chocks and took off, lost the canopy which was open for the ground test shortly after lift off.... the seat wasn't armed so he couldn't bang out so after a couple of overshoots he landed the aircraft under instructions from the tower!!! And yes it is a true story and the aircraft was usable again soon after!!
What a way to do your first solo!!!  Cool

...

The others well all glider pilots know that feeling as you leave the tug for the first time - and then wonder how to get the thing on the ground again  Grin
